Hi Deanna

Was it positive for the Antithyroidperoxidase Antibodies? Was it also possitive for the Antithyroglobulin Antibodies? You have Hashimoto's Disease, which DOES cause fluctuations in thyroid hormone output from the thyroid, until the gland runs out of steam sometime in the future, which some glands NEVER stop these fluctuations (mine certainly hasn't, and I've had Hashi's for over 10 yrs!). Why does the doctor say it's "only hypo", when he just gave you the explanation for the fluctuations of Hashi's? Both hyper and hypo obviously don't happen at the same time, they take turns! Be confident that you alREADY know more than your doctor does about this disease. He's a little more than a little confused about the sbjct. Anyway, what were the results of the other tests that he ran, with the normal lab reference ranges with them? It is important that you have the Free T3 and Free T4, from the beginning on, so that you will know how much thyroid hormone is available for use by your body, and so you will know whether your T4 is converting to T3 properly. T3 is the usable form of the hormone. T4 is the storage hormone, which converts to T3.

hashimoto's

Hello,

My name is Deanna and I've just recently been tested for thyroid disorders. My TSH came back at 3.5 which the doctor said was normal. I'd been having a sensation of a lump in my throat for over a year and he sent me into get an ultrasound which came back showing only a 5 mm lump on my thyroid....not big enought to be felt. So I persisted for more testing and got a possitive antibodies test. The doctor did nothing until a few more weeks went by while I'm waiting to see an ear nose and throat doctor. I'm just exhausted and suffering pain and have been for years and decided I didn't want to wait any more and went back to the doctor with a list of symptoms as such.

Fibromyalgia

chronic diarrhea, which has turned to constipation in the last month

massive hair loss

extreme fatigue

thick tongue sensation

extreme craving for salt

chest pain

numbness and tingling in arms and hands

muscle weakness

periods are regularly a week or more late

severe mid cycle pain that causes me to vomit

bizarre memory loss

mental fog

irritiability

etc etc........

So he decided to run my labs one more time and when those results come back this week he his starting me on thyroid medication.

My question is........is it always hashimoto's if you have antibodies? My doctor said that hashimotos is testing positive for antibodies but having hyper and hypo fluctuations........since I ony have hypo he said it's not hashimoto's but it seems the book I'm reading on the subject says it is hashimoto's.

love,

Deanna

Hi Deanna,

Yes, if you have antibodies it is Hashi's - not everyone has hyper swings.

Second, get a new doctor! 3.5 is not considered normal by anyone. The

AEA guidelines say it is up to 3.0 and most top doctors will treat

anything over 1.0 if there are symptoms like yours and/or antibodies.

If we had a penny for everytime we type that, we'd all be rich... Which

is proof of how many idiot doctors there are.
