Total carbs

A lot of people tell me that what works for them is to count the total

carbs and not concentrate on what kind of carb. But for me that doesn't

work. If I eat even a teaspoon of sugar in some tea my sugar levels will

shoot up to 200 in about a hour..Sometimes I can get away with a bit of

sugar in the evenings but not too often and it always shoots me up to at

least 160...

So for me a carb is not a carb..

Do any of you find this to be true?

I found out that for me it's the white carbs. that

sends my sugar up. The first and last time I used

white sugar my blood sugar hit 300. I had pasta for

super a few days ago and B.S. went to 278. So for me

it is the kind of carbs.

Carol,

That's what I have said about this not being a

one-fits-all disease! It's great you have found what

works for you. We're all different, but if we tell

what works for each of us we can help the others

discover their own special combination that works for

them.

That's why I get over-zealous about folks who try

to say their method is the one and only!

eat any pasta. Can live without it!

Hi Phyllis,

I can eat the long grain and wild rice without any problems, but would not

dare eat a large portion of white rice.

Potatoes don't cause an increase for me as long as I eat small portions.

I have noticed that I can eat the same meal two days in a row and get a low

reading one day and a higher reading the next. That is why I suggest when

trying new foods to test 2, 3 or 4 times before determining if you can or

cannot eat that food.

Diabetes is a strange disease.

Hi Phyllis,

I also tell everyone that what works for me may or may not work for them. I

do enjoy reading what other people can and cannot eat.

Diabetes is a challenge and I'm going to be the winner.

I have been noticing lately that since I have " been off the wagon " for

the last couple of months. This means basically eating anything I want

and not being on Atkins, that there seems to be a difference.

If I eat a baked potato with a meal, I see no more than the normal after

meal rise. But, if I eat rice at the Mexican restaurant or a home, I can

actually feel the blood sugar rising really fast. It goes up twice as

much. I can feel a bad rush in my head like being on a roller coaster.

It's feels very bad.

So I do agree with you. I know another woman who can eat candy bars and

not really much of a rise, but if she eats friut, she gets a tremendous

rise.

I understand that different carbs may be higher or more concentrated,

but this seems to really be an individual thing. Wonder why?

I couldn't agree more. Even though I was (and trying to be again after

Christmas) an Atkins person, I know lots of diabetics who are 75 years

and followed the ADA to a tee!

Even when I give my opinion, I always try to say in the e-mail that each

person must choose their way or that each person is different.

On the weight loss issue, my son lost 50 pounds earlier this year on

Atkins. Now is is on low fat. He eats alot of veggie burgers on diet

bread and is doing fine and losing.
