Guest guest
Jen, A lot of us " hide " carbs. Example: Whipped squash, zucchini or cauliflower in a meat loaf. It's a distinct problem to deprive kids on the diet of carbs even if they are the culprits. What were his favorite foods on the previous diet? Guest guest
His favorite foods were potatoes and rice bars (and cookies of course) He seems so lethargic this last week and I think his body is in great need of carbs. I have tried the butternut squash, pureed, fried, and a host of other vedgetables. He is only at the beginning of this diet, so he is limited to the first stage foods. He does seem less stimmier this week, but looks so pale and sad. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jen > > > How does he get carbs? Guest guest
JUICE Give him watered-down juice. 8oz of grape juice has more carbs than 8oz of Coke, I believe. Water it down by at least 50%. The SCD should not be a low carb diet. Applesauce, pearsauce, bananas and juice are all great ways to get carbs into him. Guest guest
" Why is it a problem to deprive carbs? Atkins claims it's perfectly OK - are we worried about weight loss? " We are worried about carbs because SCD was not intended to be a low carb diet. And yes, to be honest in my case, I personally worry about my children losing weight. They can't possibly lose even an ounce. They are both underweight as it is. Jody mom to -5.1 and -7.
Guest guest
The stages are not mandatory. Later you can make some SCD bars with nut butters, crushed nuts and honey. The listlessness is typical of initial die off. Try some Squash Fries or Chips. See recipe links on Pecan Bread. Guest guest
<<He seems so lethargic this last week and I think his body is in great need of carbs.>> The lethargy is pretty common in the beginning. Do try to get some carbs in .... juice or whatever.... but this really should be temporary. Patti
Guest guest
It goes even beyond what Jody has said. Low carb presents a threat of ketosis which would be dangerous for children. SCD aims at balance and not deprivation. We use protein, fat and specific carbohydrates. Although there is no stated minimum for daily carb consumption. people minimizing the use of fruit and/or honey for very short periods of time for whatever reason, should compensate with squash, etc. during that brief period. Even the intro diet includes carbohydrates. If we didn't, what would we call our diet :-)? > " Why is it a problem to deprive carbs? Guest guest
Sorry to disagree...... ketosis is not necessarily " dangerous " . Just not the goal on SCD and there's no reason for them to be in ketosis. Katera was in ketosis for over two years on the Keto diet (for seizure control) and was very healthy. Anyway, it's just not the goal of SCD and isn't recommended. Patti ----- Original Message ----- Low carb presents a threat of ketosis which would be dangerous for children. Guest guest
I was peaking within the parameters of SCD as is my habit and know the ketogenic diet is followed for seizures :-) Elaine is rather emphatic about clarifying this. > Sorry to disagree...... ketosis is not necessarily " dangerous " .
