Guest guest
Hi . 1) The list of side effects for anything is scary, but mostly meaningless. They have to put in the list just about anything that anyone had during the clinical trials (this includes 1000's of patients). Most are minor and will pass after a while. The one thing you have to watch for with ACE inhibitors is angioedema, which is a *rare* allergic reaction involving swelling of lips, tongue and/or throat. If that happens, call 911, because it can obstruct breathing (perhaps more likely if your son is prone to respiratory allergies). A common side effect is a chronic dry cough (occuring in between 20-30% of people taking it). 2) You can't compare fish oil and ACE inhibitors. They don't do the same thing, so it's like comparing apples to oranges. One does not replace the other. Fish oil may or may not help delay progression of the disease in the long run. ACE inhibitors help keep proteinuria down right now, and they may or may not help delay progression of the disease in the long run. Many people with IgAN are on both. Fish oil use is based on still incomplete, and disputed clinical trial evidence (it tends to be in the " it can't hurt " category. Few doctors dispute the benefits of inhibiting the ACE system in chronic glomerular diseases like IgAN, and of course, they also lower blood pressure. Guest guest
Hi I've been taking ACE inhibitors for 6 months now, and had no side effects I can attribute to them. I take 30mg a day of Lisinopril, and though the side effect list is large,m I've been largly ok. I've had a few slightly dizzy spells, but I take the tablets at night now and that works very well for me. Some complain of a cough, but that's fairly rare too. I've been on a few medicines now, and the ACE inhibitors seems the freindliest of all at the moment! Guest guest
I've been on just about every class of BP meds, and I too found that ACE inhibitors are the least objectionable in day-to-day life, along with their close cousins the angiotensin II receptor blockers (Cozaar, Diovan, Avapro, etc.). Of course, everyone's different. Pierre Re: fish oil vs ace inhibitors > Hi > > I've been taking ACE inhibitors for 6 months now, and had no side > effects I can attribute to them. Guest guest
I've been taking both fish oil (10-12 1000mg caps/day) and the Ace Inhibitor Accupril (2 40mg/day) for the past 2 years since I was diagnosed. No noticable side effects at all. fish oil vs ace inhibitors My son is 14 and has been on fish oil for about 2 years, but won't take it on a regular basis. Guest guest
Hi , We're pretty new at this. However, my 12 year old son has been taking 17.5 mg of lisinopril (an ace inhibitor) since August with no adverse side effects. The lisinopril is the most innocuous of his meds. We do double check BP's twice a day though to be on the safe side. Cy fish oil vs ace inhibitors > My son is 14 and has been on fish oil for about 2 years, but won't > take it on a regular basis. Guest guest
My son was 14 when he started on fish oil and it was a struggle. He especially hated the fishy breath. We found several things that helped. One was to keep the capsules in the refrigerator so they dissolve lower in the digestive track  helps some. Also there is a product called Breath Assure Breath Capsules, which are little gel caps that will get rid of much of the fishy after-taste. Finally his best solution was to take them all at night, instead of half in morning and half in evening. That way all the fish breath and fish burps happened at night while he was sleeping and were gone by morning. His neph wasn¹t too happy about him taking them all at night but did agree that it was better than not taking them at all. And when he was taking the fish oil regularly, it did seem to slow down significantly the decline in kidney function. Do you know why your sons neph didn’t like the idea of taking them all at once at bedtime? Guest guest
Curtis, As I recall, it had something to do with absorption being better if spread out, but I don¹t think they really know. We didn¹t notice any effect, as far as lab results, with changing to all at night. My son¹s compliance with taking medications was much better through high school and college with taking everything at night. The nephs. shrugged and said basically  OK, it that means he¹s taking everything faithfully every day, then taking them all at bedtime is fine. He even preferred to take his diuretic at bedtime, because he hated how it made him feel when he took it in the morning. Having to get up during the night wasn¹t a big issue, but he certainly had to go as soon as he woke up. Guest guest
Im on 40mg of Lisinipril, Amlodipine 10mg per and Atorvastatin Calcium 10mg pr day. I am Male 40 Yrs old 5' 10 " and weigh 11 stone now down from 12.5 stone when diagnosed in Dec last year. The lisinipril has no effects on me what so ever and I'm on the max dosage allowed I have gotten that dreaded dry cough recently when my consultant increased my Amlodipine from 5 to 10mg, splitting the dossage to having 5 ml in the morning and 5ml evening doesnt help, I start coughing an hour or two after the second dossage Anyway a big hello to everyone in this group I have learned so much from lurking in this group since my diagnoses. Guest guest
I'm not sure what you're getting is ACE inhibitor cough if you're only getting it after taking amlodipine. Amlodipine isn't an ACE inhibitor. It's a calcium channel blocker. Sometimes these drugs just make you feel a little dry. Maybe that's what's happening. The ACE inhibitor cough is different. Guest guest
Hi Marko I would like to welcome you to the group too, I think I must have missed your incoming message, but due to server problems nothing would surprise me, so apologies for not seeing it straight away. Yes I am in the UK South East area. As I am not sure of the content of your message, I cant comment too much, save to say if it is a medication causing this cough, could you not ask your GP if there is anything else you could take? Or at least how long you could expect this side effect to continue. Once again welcome to this lovely group. Guest guest
I don't know if this is available outside of Canada, but we have a cough drop candy called " Fisherman's Friend " . My nephrologist recommended it to me when I was having coughing problems. I'd have to say it worked temporarily to some extent, but the dry cough from ACE inhibitors is due to an excess of bradykinin, so it's unlikely anything would be more than a momentary comfort. Guest guest
LOL! Yes, even if it worked, you would have to decide which you can stand better, the taste of Fisherman's Friend or the ACE inhibitor cough I didn't know you had those in England. I always assumed they came from our Maritime Provinces. Mind you, we have a lot of English products here, especially candy. Guest guest
Hi Pierre Yes we can get Fisherman's Friend here in the UK, but oh boy they are horrid, I tried one once when I had catarrh, and it blew my head off, but it did help the sore throat and catarrh, so the nasty taste was a small price to pay. Guest guest
Hi , I must confess that my last message was my first :/ how rude of me not to introduce myself so here goes: My name is Mark and I live in the NW of the UK, aged 40 married with two sprogs a dog and a cat. Sept 2000, I went for a works medical that found blood and protien in my urine, bp normal. Send off to GP, referred to local Urologist who after many tests and an eventual bladder biopsy (year later) told me that they could find nought wrong and that some peaple naturally lose some blood and protein in their urine so dont worry about it come back nest year. Nov/Dec 2002, started getting dizzy spells could be sitting down or just walking around, had them 3 or 4 times a day. Headaches real baddies esp first thing in the morning and less severe ones during the day. Face felt flushed most of the time, nausious some of the time. Lack of appetitie, no sex drive. Thought I may have caught a bug but after 2 weeks and no inprovement I starting to wonder. An email went round the company promoting a health screening program about to start courtesy of the companys health department. Rang up went down an hour later measured bp at 210/109 and high colosterol. Went to see local GP same day who repeated the bp tests and arranged for blood tests and a 24hr BP monitor. To cut a long story short my gp sent me to the local A+E with a covering letter. I was kept in overnight being transferred to the renal ward in the Royal Liverpool University Teaching Hospital the next day. On Dec 20th (biopsy Dec 17) the same day my wife passed her driving test (horray) I was told that I had 20-25% kidney function left (boo hiss) so a sweet and sour day They let me out a few days later returning every few weeks for blood work/24 hr urine. My last 2 results was: Date 27/2 Hb 9.7/ K 4.5/ Ur 16.6/ Creat 448/ Pj 0.89/ Adj Cal 2.31 Date 30/3 Hb 9.8/ K 4.8/ Ur 19.3/ Creat 481/ Pj 1.2 / Adj Cal 2.31 Dont know what the Pj is, Phosporus level? Dont really know how to interpret the above figures- help anyone? I have just started EPO shots NeoRecorman 2000 twice weekly for the anaemia. I have lost 2 stone in weight was 13 stone (gym built ) down to 11 stone now and really feel the cold. Bp is hovering around 130/85 and have had the district nurse in last week to discuss what dialysis method I want, HD was my no1 choise but now im leaning towards PD, still undecided..... Anyway thats enough of me, just glad I have found this mb, I have learnt tons just reading this message board Marko IGAN wrote:Hi Marko I would like to welcome you to the group too, I think I must have missed your incoming message, but due to server problems nothing would surprise me, so apologies for not seeing it straight away. Yes I am in the UK South East area. As I am not sure of the content of your message, I cant comment too much, save to say if it is a medication causing this cough, could you not ask your GP if there is anything else you could take? Or at least how long you could expect this side effect to continue. Once again welcome to this lovely group. UK Moderator Re: Re: fish oil vs ace inhibitors Hi Marko, I wanted to welcome you to our group. Our UK contingency seems to be really growing! One of our moderators, , is there too. Is there not an alternate medication you can take to help alleviate the dreaded dry cough? It can be really annoying can't it? I hope you feel very supported and encouraged by this group Marko. Guest guest
Doh your only right Pierre me getting confused with my meds again. Is having a low attention span and a foggy brain also a symptom? If it is I have it in spadefulls Marko I'm not sure what you're getting is ACE inhibitor cough if you're only getting it after taking amlodipine. Amlodipine isn't an ACE inhibitor. It's a calcium channel blocker. Sometimes these drugs just make you feel a little dry. Maybe that's what's happening. The ACE inhibitor cough is different. Pierre Re: Re: fish oil vs ace inhibitors > > Im on 40mg of Lisinipril, Amlodipine 10mg per and Atorvastatin Calcium 10mg pr day. I am Male 40 Yrs old 5' 10 " and weigh 11 stone now down from 12.5 stone when diagnosed in Dec last year. The lisinipril has no effects on me what so ever and I'm on the max dosage allowed I have gotten that dreaded dry cough recently when my consultant increased my Amlodipine from 5 to 10mg, splitting the dossage to having 5 ml in the morning and 5ml evening doesnt help, I start coughing an hour or two after the second dossage > Anyway a big hello to everyone in this group I have learned so much from lurking in this group since my diagnoses. > Marko UK > To edit your settings for the group, go to our Yahoo Group home page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/iga-nephropathy/ Visit our companion website at www.igan.ca. Guest guest
Hi Mark, Glad to be formally introduced :-) Your experience in being diagnosed is not unlike many of us in that it was discovered on a routine urinalysis. It is very disappointing that your urologist never referred you on to a Nephrologist, which I have a very hard time understanding why he didn't. They headaches you are describing are not unusual with high blood pressure. It is very important to get that under control because hypertension is very hard on the kidneys. Your creatinine is getting up there. Have they referred you to someone to discuss dialysis options? As Pierre will tell you, it is much better to be prepared ahead of time. I am not sure though what the Pj level is. I have never heard of that. The Epo will really help you. I have been on that for about 2 years, and I call it my miracle drug :-) It really gave me back my energy and allowed me to stay awake past 8 PM! We are here with you to support you as your go through this Marko!
