OH BUDDY... you step in it now... from line #1 --- a better educational

background DOESN'T make for a better paramedic. what makes for a better

paramedic is to USE your skills... there are some AWESOME certified medics.

Don't fool your self (Mr. NON-Paramedic), this job is 80% bullsh*t and

experience with the other 20% being continuing education.

And that's the key! Not better skills, not a better character. But

the education does make a difference in many ways that affect the

person, their job, and their environment.

Re: LPs and degreesLP:

A certified paramedic with 5 years on the street will certainly be better

than a rookie paramedic with an AAS. However, if I'm comparing two medics

with equal experience and technical skills, one having a degree and a

license, for the tough cases I'll put my money on the guy with the license.

He has the best chance of deciding what the right thing is to do and an

equal chance to then do it.I would go with the medic with the 5 yrs experience, because he knows what is going on, and as it has been pointed out on here before, just because he has a degree and a license does NOT make him any better. I wish that you would realize that a degree does not make a medic. Again, just because he has a BS or MS or whatever in Basket Weaving DOES NOT MAKE him any better than any other medic on the street.

I would too, Wayne, but in this case BOTH our hypothetical medics have five years experience and have more or less equal technical skills, so I'll go with the one that has the degree and the license. He or she has the best cognitive tools for using that technical skill and experience.

Come on people,

Are you going to go to a Doctor that does not have " that piece of paper on

the wall. " I don't think so.

Yes, we all know that their are great cert. medics and great LP.

Just remember if you ever want to get more money or more respect, the public

will have to recognize Paramedics as they recognize doctors or nurses. The LP

is the first step in this process.

Hey Junior:

Having worked with a lot of managers and supervisors that DIDN'T have any formal management or business training, and who thus ran their company into the ground out of ignorance, I prefer to take my chances with the guy holding the degree. He or she couldn't be worse than the other types.

Dave

Re: LPs and degrees

sorry... being a former manager in a large market (los angeles)... a degree doesn't make you a good manager.
