Radioactive Iodine.

It's given in a capsule form to someone that needs part or all of their thyroid killed to reduce production of hormone.

They mix it together at the time it's used, a single dose.

After taking it there are restrictions for a period of days for seeing folks and special instructions for decontamination of clothing, bedding, bathroom facilities, etc.

I had it about 15 years ago.

The one where you come back is a very light dose of the same stuff. the

use it because the thyroid sucks up that iodine and then with their

monitors/equipment they can see your gland. It allows them to determine

the actual size and shape (which could indicate disease, injury or

nodules)

When they did mine I was able to watch the monitor as my gland sucked it

up.. the monitor was turned toward me... I watched how it was absorbed

and the gland take shape.. it turned out to be twice normal size, with no

abnormalities other than that. They were mixing up the other stuff and

putting it in the capsule for me at the same time they were scanning

me... then the lab results came in to confirm everything, I signed the

paper and then they took me into a room to swallow it while everyone else

left and watched me through the windows.

Yes, it's after the RAI to kill the gland that you have to stay away from

other folks and pets.... until the radiation coming off of your body has

dissipated... for that same reason you're not to get pregnant for at

LEAST six months, better 1 year.. to be sure that your baby is safe.

Mine was about 15 years ago...

I'm not exactly sure of the science of it.. but it's my understanding that the radioactive iodine molecules, as they are released from the gland, enter the blood stream and are expelled from the body via moisture... sweat, urine, bowel content and the moisture released while breathing, oh, and tears.

That is why you have to decontaminate anything that you touch, special care with the bathroom... and special care with laundry...

The radiation that they use is supposed to have a VERY short half life, most of it shot while still in the gland.

I'd actually like to do some more research on it.... what other side affects that it might have on the body.. are some of the issues that I'm facing now, from that? Or are they just from the years and years of being underdosed by stupid docs?
