SCD trial not going well....

Hello,

Hoping some of you can help shed some light...

Our 5 1/2 year old son has been GF/CF for going on three years with

tremendous success. His DAN doctor wants him to switch to SCD as he

thinks this is the next logical step for our carb junkie kid.

He has a fairly good diet with GF/CF, though he is still very picky.

All meats are either in a nugget form, hot dog, or tacquito. Lots of

chips and snacks with potatoes, corn, rice...all the yeast feeders.

And he has battle yeast for years, though only needs an antifungal

once or twice a year. Sugar is fairly low, and candy is given very

sparingly (a small package of Skittles or Starburst can last several

months).

I've been cooking several hours a day, trying various SCD recipes.

At first I used butter, thinking he should be able to handle it since

there are a few store-bought foods with butter that he has been able

to tolerate. Two weeks into SCD, he began major stims and

aggression, which I think were reactions to butter. Threw out

several batches of muffins and other baked goods, and found a

margerine with Soy Lectithin and soy oil but no other forms of soy

and started again.

He loves the new SCD muffins, pancakes, and has even accepted fruit

leather (previous refused).

But now he has started vomitting an our or so after meals, and loses

everything he ate previously. He went to the doctor just a few days

ago, in excellent health. No fevers, no behaviors, but can't keep

his food down.

I'm so concerned what to feed him now. He's still GF/CF, but doesn't

seem to be able to handle all of the extra eggs, almond flour, and

honey (which are the only changes we've made in diet).

Any suggestions? Oh, and he has also had several poop accidents in

the past few days....his stools had been formed for over a year, once

we addressed past yeast issues, and he has just come off an

antifungal a few weeks ago, so I do not suspect yeast.

Diane,

I don't know if you have read Pecanbread.com yet or not, but it is

really recommended to start with the intro diet and slowly add foods

to your child's diet.

Switching from GFCF to allowing all of the legal SCD foods is not the

best way to do this, although some have done this.

I think the best results are seen by starting at the beginning.

It is quite possible that your son doesn't tolerate almonds. Many of

the kids with autism did not initially tolerate almonds, but most of

them did just fine with pecans (thus the name of this list and the

website).

I don't know of any legal margarines. We use coconut oil instead of

butter in recipes. Margarines contain all sorts of unhealthy stuff,

hydrogenated oil, etc.

If your son previously tolerated butter, I doubt the reaction you are

seeing is from the butter, but anything is possible.

We are here to help you in any way that we can. Our first suggestion

is always to read Breaking the Vicious Cycle and the information on

Pecanbread.com.

Please consider starting over with the intro diet and slowly adding

new foods so that you can figure out what the problem is.

Please do not feed Skittles. Traces of refined dissaccharide sugar feed

bacterial

overgrowth. You have the choice of making a gradual transition from the former

diet but please eliminate things like Skittles and Starburst. There are plenty

of SCD candy recipes.

Read BTVC and gain an understanding of the science behind SCD and how some

of the foods you are using and are not ready to exclude can impair healing.

If you've been having success it's safe to say your child will do well on

SCD. Who is that wise doctor by the way?
