Guest guest
Fixing diarrhea .. for people and dogs .. when caused by too much fat in the diet or a bacteria, let the diarrhea run its course. It is the body's natural way of cleansing itself. During this time make sure the body stays hydrated .. water .. water .. water ... if the person or dog will not drink water, then Pedialyte is good. It comes in plain or fruit flavors for people .. for dogs, add 1/2 bouillon chicken cube to a quart of plain Pedialyte. If the diarrhea is severe and watery, Immodium or Pepto Bismol is a good choice. For dogs-- Pepto Bismol 1 tsp. per 5 lb every 6 hours (3-4 TBSP per 65 lb dog every 6 hrs) For dogs-- one Immodium caplet at a time .. don't double it unless the dog is over 100 pounds. Repeat every 6 hours until diarrhea has stopped. CAUTION!!! Collies should NEVER have Immodium or Ivermectin (used as a heart worm preventative). A veterinarian at WSU discovered that the cause of Ivermectin sensitivity in Collies is a deletion mutation in the MDR1 gene. Then gene affects a protein in the blood and since Immodium is a substrate of Ivermectin, some collies are very susceptible to Immodium and will go into coma then death. There is a test available through your vet to determine if your dog is susceptible. (Studies are being performed now on other herding dogs such as Australia, Belgian, and Old English sheepdogs) After 12 - 24 hours, your body will have flushed not only the bad bacteria but the good bacteria from the body. So the good bacteria must be reintroduced to the body. Plain yogurt in small amounts as well as buttermilk, or aged cheese (such as cheddar block cheese) are a good source of this good bacteria.
