Guest guest
Relating to Annie's post of nadas having no empathy etc -> e.g. " " So you have a headache, well, big deal. I need you to take me to the store NOW, " says nada)rings a bell with me. " My nada often said " well *I've* got a headache too, and *I've* had a tough day too " when I made one complaint about myself/day etc. God it got to me. And sometimes I find myself saying that to my husband! arghh! Like I have to compete for some empathy or something. Annyoing. Also what is it about nadas exaggerating their health? Nada often said she had a migraine when obviously it was just a headache because she could still manage to sit in front of the TV with it blaring, or mow the lawns!?! Ironically enough her 4th husband actually does suffer migraines, and he looks awful when he has, but that doesn't stop her from exaggerating the truth because now its worse " *we* suffer " " you just don't understand " splatter comes out of her. Guest guest
Mine is all about this. I say, " My house is a mess, " she says, " Well mine is just as bad! I haven't had ANY TIME to DO A THING! " (she and my dad are retired) I say, " I have a bad migrane, " she says, " My shoulder is hurting worse today than it has in a long time. I'm going to have to restart physical therapy. " I say, " I got the cold the kids had, " she says. " Oh I think I do, too. I've been stuffy all day. " When she found out she needed rotator cuff (shoulder) surgery this Thanksgiving, she tried to blame the injury on holding my kids when they were babies. They are 3 and 5. Grr. Guest guest
My most recent experience of this went as follows: " I had a panic attack the other day " " Well I had six panic attacks today " Seriously, does she really need to outdo me when it comes to this?? The funniest thing about it was that it was a confused attempt on my part to show empathy to HER because she always has panic attacks and I wanted to tell her I know what it felt like.. needless to say I lost interest in trying to reach out pretty damn quickly. So infuriating... > > Relating to Annie's post of nadas having no empathy etc -> e.g. " " So > you have a headache, well, big deal. Guest guest
No empathy for sure...I had very painful menstrual cramps as a teenager and nada would insist regardless that I attend school even when I was almost doubled over with pain and she never gave me any painkillers either.Just barked at me to get my stuff and get going. Years later I was talking to one of her best friends from high school and somehow the subject of menstrual cramps came up,don't ask me how now! This friend said, " Oh,your mother had the worst problems with her periods. When we were in high school she had to stay home in bed and your grandmother had to give her a heating pad and aspirin for the pain, she suffered terribly... " I just wanted to slap nada silly when her friend told me that. Why is it that they are incapable of passing on any loving nurture that is shown to them? Argh!!! Or was her " terrible suffering " an act to get attention so she assumed I was also only acting? Unfortunately my pain was real and I had to save up my lunch money to buy myself some Midol. > > Relating to Annie's post of nadas having no empathy etc -> e.g. " " So > you have a headache, well, big deal. No one else is allowed to be a victim when the NADA is in the room. They are the only ones who are allowed to feel any pain.
