FINDING MAY LEAD TO TREATMENT FOR LOU GEHRIG'S DISEASE: Researchers have

identified a mechanism that may slow the progression of Lou Gehrig's

disease. They said the discovery may suggest strategies for drug treatment

of the disease, officially called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

The mouse study, led by Dr. Friedlander of Harvard Medical School

and the Brigham and Women's Hospital Neuroapoptosis Laboratory and

Neurosurgical Service, was published in the journal Science. The scientists

focused on caspases, enzymes triggered in programmed cell death to destroy

cells that are no longer needed or are abnormal. Researchers think in

neurodegenerative diseases like ALS, the process is misdirected and begins

to destroy neurons. In the study, mice given a compound called zVAD-fmk,

which blocks the action of caspases, developed ALS-like symptoms later and

lived 22 percent longer than the mice that did not receive the drug.

GENES CONTROL CORTEX FORMATION: Researchers have found that specific

genes control how the cortex in the brain forms during development. The

neuroscientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla

said in the journal Science the cortex governs abstract reasoning and

symbolic thought. The finding in the study of mice may help researchers

understand disorders of cortical development such as cerebral palsy or

schizophrenia. " It's also the first genetic evidence to address a

long-standing dispute among neuroscientists, " said senior study author

Dennis O'Leary. " Many in the field thought that development of the cortex

was influenced solely by other parts of the brain, but our work shows that

genes within the cortex itself play a fundamental role. "

NERVE PROTEIN KEY TO PAIN: Scientists have found a protein on the

surface of many sensory nerves triggers sensations of pain when exposed to

hot temperatures or hot food. The protein is called capsaicin receptor. The

research indicates blocking this receptor could bring pain relief. " We have

demonstrated how a single molecule affects the behavior of the whole

animal, " said Julius, professor of cellular and molecular

pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco, and senior

author of the paper published in the journal Science. " It looks like the

capsaicin receptor could be a target for drugs to reduce the sensitivity to

some kinds of pain caused by tissue injury. "

DEVICE IMPROVES SAFETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGY: A device is making

anesthesiology safer for patients. The device is called the Bispectral

Index, or BIS, monitor. It tells the anesthesiologist how awake or asleep

the patient is, thereby helping the doctor determine the right amount of

drug to use. The optimal dosage helps the patient awaken faster and feel

fewer side effects of anesthesia. It is of particular benefit to the very

young and the very old, who are especially sensitive to the side effects of

anesthesia. A recent study found BIS monitoring in children resulted in 24

percent less drug use, faster wake-up and less time spent in the hospital,

said Dr. Carolyn Bannister, chief of anesthesiology at Children's

Healthcare for Atlanta in Egleston. The device is used in more than 700

hospitals. The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation wants to make

anesthesia in the doctor's office as safe as in the hospital, where the

mortality rate is down to one in every 100,000 to 250,000 cases.
