My name is Chrissy, I am 31 years old, live in Missouri with my husband and have had 8 years of thyroid hell. 8 years ago, in 1996 I discovered a lump in the front of my neck, long story short it ended up being a cancerous tumor on my right thyroid so had the whole thyroid removed and following that had a dose of radioactive iodine. After that was put on synthroid but for some reason the Dr. had a hard time getting my levels right. Finally in 2000 an Endocrinologist came to my town so got into her and luckily am still her patient, she got my levels under control. But November of last year noticed my lymph nodes swelling, had been through numerous tests, ultra sounds coming back showing lymph nodes very swollen, have recently been taken completely off my synthroid for 6 weeks and had the body scan with taking a radiation pill and it came back positive, it is showing something in my neck, they told me they can't tell me it is cancer or not, and they think it could be left over tissue from 8 years ago. So am scheduled for radioactive iodine in June. Luckily I can do that as an outpatient now, but it will be hard, first 3 days no contact with anyone, days 4-14 only 2 hours a day with people. And to back track, they think my lymph nodes are fine, just swollen. Then after my radioactive iodine in June, have to have the body scan in 1 year to see if it got it all. Scary and a long process and am nervous about gaining more weight. I really need a support group, this all is so emotional and scary. Luckily I do not have to work outside of the home, so thats easy on me, and we never had children, always had to many health problems. Anyway, am looking forward to meeting you all. But in my latest ultrasound it was labeled as a solid nodule. I also have a larger right lobe. I have several nodules on the right and one larger one on the left. I go in for surgery next month. Here is a bit about hypoechoic nodules. Just go to a search engine and type in the words and you will get tons of info! Good luck. Hyperechoic solid nodules are usually benign (96%), but sclerosing papillary neoplasms can also have this appearance. Mixed lesions represent solid lesions which have undergone variable degrees of cystic degeneration and are benign in 85% of cases). Cystic lesions that are completely smooth walled and anechoic are almost always benign. Iso- or hypoechoic lesions may be benign or malignant. Since thyroid ultrasound cannot determine if a nodule is benign or malignant, it is not routinely recommended in the initial evaluation of a thyroid nodule. However, it may be useful to guide fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of a thyroid nodule. Thyroid ultrasound can also document the size of a thyroid nodule and provide an objective parameter for assessing response to hormone suppression.
