Guest guest
Hello Group, I have been denied twice by social security and was just told that I will have to wait at least 18 months for a trial to determine if I am eligible. Is anyone aware of any other forms of aid, state or local. I have food stamps and thats it. This system seems so unfair to me. Its been four years without a income, and it will be at least four years before SSDI makes a decision. What to people do? How are you suppose to survive? Thanks for any help randyt

Randy - If you need medications, the first thing you should do is apply for medication assistance from the manufacturers of your drugs. Every manufacturer has a medication assistance program, where they give their medications free (or at a greatly reduced rate, depending on your ability to pay) to those who need financial assistance. They are easy to find and apply for. Just go to the website for the manufacturer of your drug (find the manufacturer's name on your prescription label, or ask your pharmacist - the company will have a website under their name, such as www.pfizer.com , which makes Lyrica). Right on the main web page for every manufacturer, you will see a link to their assistance program, in nice big letters. Click there and apply. You may need your doctor to fill out a form for you, but their offices are used to doing it and will be happy to help. Many of the programs apply even if you have insurance, as long as the cost is prohibitive for your income (or lack of income!) If you take medications, that will give you a lot of relief, right off the bat! Just one idea to help. Cheryl in AZ Moderator

Randy - If you are in the US, contact your state's department of health and human services (or whatever a similar department is called in your state). Ask about " aid for needy disabled " or any other available services offered by the state. If you are a senior, check with your Area Agency on Aging for help. Call your local United Way agency and the local chapter of the Salvation Army to ask about help with obtaining public assistance. You can locate both either in the phone book or on the web: www.unitedway.org www.salvationarmy.org These would be a place to start.
