Hi ,

Well right now its ok because she is able to compensate and I did have a few

things setup. But I cant get consultant services with the teacher of the

deaf and I cant get lipreading or auditory training. Right now they are not

imperative but if she loses any more it will be. I did get preferential

seating, written directions for any assignment/test, closed captioning,

repeating of instructions as necessary, never using the vernacular, " Did you

hear me " to her specifically as she would just die!

So basically the school gave me everything they can at their disposal. They

just cant give me the itinerant (teacher of the deaf )services or the speech

therapy services as that requires another dept's authorization. They of

course will only authorize those services with an IEP.

I may be more apt to contact you regarding my deaf son who they did turn down

for speech and am having numerous problems since putting him in public

school. They are all different problems than he had before

I had to write and give an update on what is happening with Gabe and me

getting him an IEP. I had a meeting last Thursday for which I invited the

director of special Ed for the district. This was to our 504 meeting. She

ended up advocating for me, saying the system has failed my son. (Yes, I

have all of this on tape.)

We are redoing the special Ed testing so he can get an IEP. That is a

formality at this point because the team agreed he needs an IEP but the

testing is over a year old. The SLP has been ordered to start Earobics with

Gabe, we are getting the classroom soundfield for him. He is finally going

to get the remediation for CAPD that I have been asking for. We are

exploring the logistics of doing FastForward with Donna Morere, long

distance, and I am just so excited.

This whole mess started two and a half years ago. The special Ed teacher

messed up the timelines and testing. I started writing letters. The

principal and asst.. principal were so busy trying to cover everything up

and prove I was wrong they forgot about the kid. This year there has been a

huge shakeup. In this school over a third of the teachers are new, we have

new office staff, and new administration. Now everyone is horrified that

this kid hasn't had an IEP for this many years and we are on the fast track.

I was even allowed to pick the private provider I wanted to do the CAPD

testing.

Gabe is finally going to get the help he needs. It's about time too. He

starts middle school next year.

Barb,

I'm sooooo excited! Donna Morere will be able to work wonders with Gabe! I'm

sooo happy you contacted her! You'll be able to do it long-distance with no

problem and

if there's ever a glitch, you'll be able to travel to her for a Saturday visit

to straighten it out! Once you see the program, you might even give it a shot

for Petya.

I am SOOOO happy for you!!! Now, get yourself a good attorney and battle for

their custody. It doesn't matter what kind of a jerk he is, it's the quality of

the

attorney that counts! You'll succeed in all of this! You're a winner!

Hugs of congratulations (while I'm jumping up and down trying to type)

Terry,

Their were two main reasons I had so much trouble getting Gabe the help he

needed. First of all he is a good kid. He sits in class, does not talk

back to the teacher or cause any trouble. The other reason is that he is on

grade level.

I have been saying for years that this kid needs to be remedied. He has

been getting OT services for years since he was three years old. I am not

sure how this school was justifying giving OT to a kid that didn't have an

IEP or a 504 but I was not complaining about that because the OT was on my

side all the way saying that Gabe needed an IEP.

The school's stance was all of the things that were causing him problems

were not adversely impacting his education. He cannot sing and do actions

to a song at the same time. No one thought this was a big deal even thought

I repeatedly pointed out he could not listen and take notes at the same time

either. There isn't much of that going on in the elementary years. So we

were just going to have to wait for him to fail before the school stepped in

with services.

The OT has been trying to point out the handwriting issue for two years.

This is their own OT. The regular Ed people preferred to believe he was

lazy, sloppy, in a hurry, just didn't try, even though their own OT said

there were specific OT issues to deal with.

If your daughter is getting by with accommodations and compensating with

hard work you have work to do on this. Ask for testing through special Ed.

Bypass the school and go directly to district. You haven't gotten past the

regular Ed people yet. Just because a student is not behind does not mean

that they are not entitled to services. You don't know without the testing.

Even gifted kids may be entitled to special Ed services.
