Hi

I have posted in the past about my son's problem with bedwetting as well as

urgency and frequency to urinate during the day. My son was fully potty

trained day and night for about a year prior to this diet. These problems

started

when we began SCD.

I had thought that the bedwetting was related to his diet being high in

protein on SCD. However, when I lowered the amount of protein, it seemed to

help,

but did not resolve the problem.

After doing further research, I have discovered that the bedwetting is the

result of a magnesium deficiency. My son cannot have any nuts since he is

severely allergic, so he is not getting any source of magnesium in his diet. I

also began giving Zachary a calcium supplement when we started SCD since I could

no longer use fortified juice to meet his requirements. This can aggravate

the problem. I read the following at www. enzymestuff.com:

" The symptoms of magnesium deficiency are irritability, tantrums, seizures,

insomnia, muscle cramps/twitching, hyperactivity and poor digestion among

others. Magnesium is needed for proper electrolyte function, over 300 enzyme

functions, and calcium absorbtion.

.. . . one of the primary sources of dietary magnesium is whole grains and

cereals. If one goes 100% gluten free, you would be losing a main source of

magnesium, and could go deficient especially if you are also supplementing with

extra calcium to make up for the

casein free part. "

I have read on many on websites that bedwetting can occur due to a magnesium

deficiency due to lack of muscle control.

I had suspected this when we began the diet and supplemented with magnesium

oxide and epsom baths. Again, this seemed to help some, but did not resolve

the problem, so I thought something else must be the cause. It turns out that

my son was not absorbing the magnesium oxide. I am now giving him a liquid

form of magnesium " Waters of Oz " and this instantly resolved his bedwetting

problems at night and his urgency to urinate (sometimes every 15 minutes) during

the day. I do not even have to wake him at night to go to the bathroom. He

just gets up and goes like he used to do pre-SCD. This also seems to have

stopped him from having extreme thirst all the time.

I think this is very important. From what I have read, a magnesium

deficiency can lead to serious complications. When you look at some of the

other

symptoms of magnesium deficiency, I also wonder if this is possibly impacting

the

children that are not doing as well on the diet (at least the children on the

diet that are not consuming nuts).

For anyone interested in more information:

or simply do a search on " bedwetting AND magnesium deficiency " and you will

find plenty to read.

Hi ,

Thanks for the great information, We have been using water oz products

for sometime , and they are terrific products that are easily absorbed into the

body. We are using calcium and magnesium , and ran out of the magnesium and my

son started having accidents at school during nap time , even after he went to

the bathroom before nap . So that sheds allot of light on the situation.

I've had clients that have seen a similar reaction , so thanks for the info

this really helps. :

thanks,

Angie
