Guest guest
First time I've ever heard of someone who loved fish oil : ) No, flax seed oil is not the same as fish oil. In a nutshell, with fish oil, the fish has already converted the basic fatty acids into EPA and DHA. These are the compounds that are thought to exert the anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil. With flax oil, the basic building blocks are there, but not as EPA and DHA. Your own body has to metabolise the flax oil to produce the EPA and DHA fatty acids. The only problem is, you would have to consume impossibly large amounts of flax oil to end up with the same amounts of EPA and DHA as there is in fish oil. You cannot take large amounts of fish oil indefinitely anyway, because you would end up with an imbalance of other fatty acids. So, in effect, those 6 or 12 gelatin capsules of fish oil are highly concentrated in EPA and DHA. Flax oil isn't. Guest guest
Hi Pierre, You wrote " You cannot take large amounts of fish oil indefinitely > anyway, because you would end up with an imbalance of other fatty acids. " Did you mean large amounts of flax oil indefinitely? I never heard anything that suggested that our fishy days are numbered. Hope all is well in your part of the world. Guest guest
Oops! Thanks for pointing that out Cy. I did mean that to read " flax oil " , not fish oil. Guest guest
Hi, Flax seed oil, is also anti-inflamatory , and your body creates the omega 3,6, & 9, from the daily intake of the oil. Unlike the fish oil, which doesn't need converting. According to the igan web page, there are very specific amounts of fish oil, but it is not known about the amounts of flax seed oil. My experience has been much more positive with the flax seed oil than with the fish oil. I react with the fish oil, but not to the 2 tablespoons of flax seed oil, daily! Another benefit of flax seed oil, is the increased production of prostaglandins, which slows down from age 25 and up.
