Guest guest
Gwen, We probably use the same pediatric gastroenterologist. What state are you in? I am going to try an herbal, Boswellia Serrata, instead of Colazal (we already tried Sulfasalazine) that did better in a clinical trial than Sulfasalazine, and shouldn't have side effects like pharmaceuticals. I've found how to obtain the raw material and am waiting for a quote on having it put into capsules. We fed potato snacks A LOT pre-SCD and Ian's DAN! doctor said really we should find something other than food as reinforcers for the home program. I think part of the reason that we may have seen improvement on SCD, was because his DAN! doctor said no more than 1 snack in between meals, and a digestive enzyme also with snacks; snacks not just consisting of sugar (eg chicken with the pear sauce). Not grazing on food all day probably gave his tummy a chance to rest, I would think. We had a period of formed stools after starting SCD using NO medication for colitis. You can e-mail me at ActionForAngels@... . Teri Starting the diet Hi, I have been reading the posts and the BTVC book for several weeks now to get ready to start the diet with my son, who is 6. He's been GFCFSF (and pretty much everything else free) for about 3 years. He has colitis and takes asulphadine for it. We have an awesome pediatric Gastroenterologist who works with autisitic kids who prescribed it. But my son still has digestive issues (although they are better) and really has made no cognitive or language gains because of the diet. Anyway, I've read the intro diet and I'm wondering 2 things before we start. Can my son continue to take his medication? Also, he is really hooked on gf cereal and gf potato chips and I'm concerned that he will have a hard time when we take them away. The chips and cereal are also used as part of his therapy. We use a program called verbal behaviors and they are 2 of his primary signs. Should we follow the intro strictly in the beginning or is there something that we can give him that will substitute for either of those things? I have no problem with doing it strictly, but I know that it will be much harder on my son. Thanks, Gwen
Guest guest
Hi Teri, Thanks for getting back to me. We use Dr. Krigsman in Woodbury, NY. He has really been great to us! Is that your dr? I wonder what he would think about trying something herbal for 's tummy. is also a grazer. He would eat chips and cereal all day long if we would let him. The program that we do (called verbal behaviors) uses sign language (as doesn't speak at all) and 2 of his signs are chip and cereal. So it is a little different than using the foods for reinforcement. By using things that are highly motivating to him, it encourages him to sign more frequently and the hope is to communicate more. Anyway, I am concerned about him losing these signs that he has learned so well and becoming frustrated that he can't communicate with us. As far as reinforcers for his DT work, we use videos and praise which seem to work pretty well with him. > Gwen, > > We probably use the same pediatric gastroenterologist. What state are you in? I made something this morning that came out like a hot cereal. I used the pulp of one zucchini, added two ounces of DCCC 1/2 cup almond flour and one egg, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda and a little ginger, some snips of Basil and Oregano and baked it 35-40 minutes uncovered in a greased onion soup dish . It had to cool for five minutes and put honey on top. it reminded me of Cream of Wheat. Carol F.
Guest guest
Rhonda, I just make as much carrot juice as my juicer will let me in one cycle...... about 12 ounces...... and add two cloves of fresh garlic down the chute with the carrots. I'm not sure if there is an exact amount or ratio. is the one that told me about this..... but I know she has limited access to her computer at the moment. Hopefully, she'll read this message and respond. I know she also crushes the whole clove of garlic into the juice..... so that the garlic pulp goes into the juice..... she doesn't put it through the chute of her juicer. I am not sure why, but I know she has felt that was important for her boys (and maybe she can explain it better). Katera has to have everything strained or pureed or she'll choke..... so I have juiced it in so the pulp will be strained out. It's pretty darned strong tasting...... so you might want to go with a smaller amount of garlic and try it to see if your child will accept it. Also, some garlic is stronger/hotter than others...... I know that if you cut into a clove of garlic and see any green color, that means it's starting to sprout and although it's still good to eat, it will be much hotter in flavor. Don't know if that changes it's therapeutic qualities or not. Anyway, I think I remember saying to give it twice a day (I'm not sure how much.... maybe 4 to 6 oz?) for a few weeks. Guest guest
> Can anyone tell me the carrot juice/garlic ratios and > amounts to give? Thanks. > Rhonda Hi Rhonda, I use about 4oz of carrot juice and 4oz of water and crush one large clove of garlic in it. I started out boiling the carrot juice and stopped that at one stage but have actually decided to boil. I seem to see better results. Good luck
Guest guest
My kids and I did this in September (or rather, I did this to them in September!). I juiced enough carrots to give everyone about a 4-ounce paper cup full of carrot juice, then I crushed a clove of garlic into each cup. I did this twice a day and managed to get my kids to drink it for three weeks straight. Be sure to give it with food because it will cause a stomach-ache on an empty stomach. It did definitely cause die-off. Be warned, though, that young kids or picky eaters will probably not cooperate.
