Guest guest
Hi , Hi Connie Isn't it just a pain in the rear end all this insurance business. I was in group health insurance (UK) at work, but that ceased as soon as I was medically retired, but the insurance company did agree to allow me to transfer to a personal one, current medical conditions accepted, but it cost me some £100 a month for basic cover, which I thought fine. However 2 yrs down the line, they suddenly declined to renew my policy....why....because my condition was unstable, unpredictable in nature, and complicated....erm excuse me is that not why we pay mega pounds for insurance. After much arguing they agreed to take me back on, but at a horrendous monthly amount, which quite frankly I could not afford, nor was I prepared to pay. So back to the NHS system for me, and I have been looked after very well thus far, save having to wait a bit longer maybe. I think it is complete effrontery on the insurance side of things to what in my mind is almost treating us like lepers.....almost saying we are an insurance risk based on things that may or may not happen, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it really is a farce. Sorry getting off my soapbox now too, but a great message Connie. , I agree with Connie, be sure to suss out all the options before making any hard and fast decisions. I am deeply sorry that you have been grounded and I know from previous messages from you how devastated you must be right now, but you are among friends here, who are willing and able to share your pain, and try to help support you morally. Best wishes both of you. UK Moderator Insurance Question Hello everyone, The board came back with the same verdict as before. It looks like I am grounded and it looks like I am going to be getting out of the military. My question is, has anyone had a difficult time getting health insurance with IgAN. I know the question of life insurance has been discussed but I don't remember health insurance. The reason I am asking is that I think my wife and I have decided that it would be in my best interest to get out of the military. The only negative would be medical insurance. If I stay in the military I would basically have medical insurance for the rest of my life. If I get out I would be dependant upon the medical insurance of the company that I work for. I will have a service connect disability, meaning that I will have the benefit of using the Veteran Hospital at free of charge for the rest of my life. So I do have medical insurance per say. The only problem with that is that the quality of care at the VA is sometimes very minimal. I just don't want to have to rely on the VA for treatment. My other concern is if I do progress to End Stage how will the medical insurance work. Are there any programs available that would help me with medical care? Thanks for your help. Guest guest
and Connie, Thank you so much for providing me this information. Today I did some research on the topic and I think I am now changing my mind AGAIN. I really do not think I can get out of the Air Force considering the Health Insurance issue. Basically with the Air Force I know I will always have medical insurance no questions asked. The problem is do I want to do something for the next 10 years that I have no desire doing. What a question and problem. Thanks everyone, you have no idea how good it is to talk to you guys about this stuff. My spirits are good! Guest guest
Thanks , Gosh, I guess that I went a little overboard with my message. I actually think that steam was rolling from my keys as I was typing it's so frustrating. Insurance is such a sore subject with me. My main reason for asking for it with my job, was more to protect myself and my family for the expenses of dialysis or transplant by having a primary and then a secondary insurance to help cover the gaps. Please excuse my ignorance if this is worldwide, but here in the US there is a plan called AFLAC and it pays you if you have a major medical problem providing that you have that specific coverage and even they denied me for heart attack coverage stating that with a major organ disease they would not cover another major organ because of the stress to the heart from kidney disease. So this is why I really cautioned to be careful and check out all of his options before he makes the final decision. Overall I've been lucky, I've had continuous coverage, but I just hope that the bottom doesn't fall out! Thanks for the uplifting message and letting me scream and shout! Guest guest
Connie, Please don't apologize. I am really glad that you shared your experience with us. The whole reason for this group is to be able to share our experiences so that we all can learn from them. As a group we are much stronger than if we were alone. I know me personally, your story helped me more than words can express. Honestly, without your story I would have made a grave mistake. THANK YOU! Guest guest
Connie, I would never do that to you. Thankfully I have 1 more year left in the military. I just had to make the decision now because when the re-training package is presented to me I am going to turn it down. Turning the training down would force me to get out when my time is up. The reason I said thankfully about having 1 more year is that I know the job market is very tough and hopefully it will improve in 1 year. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for the thought. Actually I think I could change branches but the problem is that I have no desire. After weighting all the options I think working for the government in a different capacity than the military is the best thing for my family. Right now I have no intention of burning any bridges which means my plans are between me, my wife, and this group. Who knows maybe something good will come of this whole mess. ----Original Message----- From: Woollard Sent: Wednesday, January 08, 2003 2:59 PM To: iga-nephropathy Subject: Re: Insurance Questions - A great big rip off!!!!! Guest guest
Thank you so much. The great thing is that I know you all know what I am going through. When I try to talk to my friends they usually just stare at me and don't know what to say. It is really uncomfortable talking to other people that don't know what it is like to deal with this disease and its complications. Thanks again!
