, my experience with Risperdal occurred when Don was first diagnosed

with Alzheimer's. He was acting out his hallucination, and I called the

Doctor. Through his nurse he prescribed Risperdal. I gave it to Don

faithfully, but he began having a lot of chest pain. I read the printout and it

plainly states in a red box to watch for heart trouble. (Something like that.)

My husband has had two open heart surgeries, and three stents. The doctor

knew this, or should have, it was in my husband's records.

My husband became more and more Zombie like. And getting sicker with his

heart by the day. I was up most of the night with him. The medication nearly

killed him. I never could reach the doctor. I weaned him off the

medication. From start to finish was three weeks.

I quickly found a fine Geriatric/Psychiatrist. He said I acted wisely.

Some can handle Risperdal but others will have dire effects. So, I say

just watch him closely. If you see things that shouldn't be, then don't

hesitate to get him off the Risperdal.

pretty much slept. When he got up in the afternoon, he seemed to acting

like he was dreaming. When I tried to change his diaper, he tried to wipe

his feces on me. Then he punched and kicked me. I had to hold him down on

the ground. Today, we had several of these bouts. I started getting scared

because this is a long weekend and I cannot take this much longer. I

called his Neurologist, who was the one that prescribed the Seroquel. He

seemed very sympathetic to my dilemna and said he needs to be placed. I told

him we were already looking into that. He said he is very reluctant to

prescribe me Risperdal but he said there is little options left. I am to stop

the Seroquel and go on to 1 Risperdal at night and I can slowly increase

it to 2. He knows that this will make the Parkinson's worst.

I just want to live through this weekend so I can hopefully meet with the

case workers who can help get my dad placed. I don't have much

options.......so I need to try this med. What I want to know is has anyone

else used

this med and what kind of side effect did it have, if any? Any other

suggestions?

When my husband was trapped in his hallucinations he exhibited many non verbal

signs of pain. How one defines pain and how it is interrpeted by the patient is

a subject all on it's own. His team, including Hospice, agreed that they would

treat the symptoms and Roxinal (morphine) alone with low doses of seraquil and

the Exelon patch were the only medications we knew would work successfully. The

Seraquil in the lower dose range was effective, but he truly relaxed and let go

of the terrible hallicinations that were driving his behavior when we started

the Roxinol. This drug was adjusted in strength as his discomfort and pain

exhibited itself.

It was the magic bullet for us.
