Permanent LUPRON Effects or what?

I'm 68 years old, 4 months post-treatment for PC with modulated beam

treatment. PSA 0.0634. I might add that treatment was uneventful.

LUPRON caused expected effects DURING treatment, however 4 months out

testicular atrophy, and recently, swelling and tenderness of my nipples

lead me to believe other things may be wrong.

Went to my URO, no help, " can't give hormone supplements to cancer

patients " .

HMMMMMMMMM, my wife is ex-cancer patient, for breast cancer, and she's

on hormones.

Nipple tenderness and breast swelling, shrunken testicles, extreme

lethargy, plus ZERO libido, and total ED tells me I need some

intervention.

Is it time to see an Endocrinologist, or is this going to be my

condition till I die?

Hi rustyduck.

I would suggest that it is time to visit www.cancerimmunity.org and follow up on anything that Zheng Cui has published on his work with mice.

Hi there,

Everyone reacts differently to treatment

and side effects are varied. What you describe are some pretty standard side

effects from what is often called “hormone treatment” but is more

correctly known as ADT (Androgen Deprivation Therapy). Apart from the breast

enlargement, most of the symptoms of the side effects should fade if you stop

ADT – that is why some men choose intermittent therapy, although there

are some dangers and problems with that choice and it requires close

monitoring. The changes to your breast are likely to be permanent – they could

possily have been prevented by having a low dose of radiation before commencing

your ADT.

It seems from what you have said that you received

a Lupron shot (which is one type of ADT) either before or after your radiation

treatment. Is that so and di you only get one shot? Are you on any other medication?

What did you expect your urologist to give you by the way of “hormone

treatment” to alleviate your symptoms?

It seems to me that your best bet would be

to consult a medical oncologist rather than a uroplogist.

All the best

I had the usual " pre rad -treatment " LUPRON Depot injection to induce

chemical castration (shutdown Testosterone production). That was 9

months ago. Hypogonadism should NOT be significant after 9 months,

neither should breast swelling/nipple tenderness.

T to E blood work will reveal status, I presume.

Uro hasn't done that. (He's not inspiring me)

What I was wondering was has anyone experienced these latent problems

after LUPRON, OR am I having endocrine system problems?

It is by no means ‘usual’ to

have ADT (Androgen Deprivation Therapy) prior to radiation treatment. Many radiologists

do this, but by no means all because studies have demonstrated that there may

be no advantage for the increased risk of side effects.

I have read reports of men having a

similar reaction to yours following administration of Lupron. The recovery

period varied from a fairly short time to years and there were even reports of

no recovery. I seem to recall that there was a law suit against the

manufacturers over the issue some time back – there certainly was one by

some women who had severe side effects.
