fine needle aspiration...the gist of it?

Hello..I am supposed to make an appt with the hospital to have two

nodules " aspired " ..they are less than 1 cm in size...i do not see/feel

anything on my neck?

The question I have is how big of a deal is this FNA procedure?..I

mean, is there a lot of pain?..I had an elbow joint shot the other day

and that was no fun, though, tolerable..

Any of you had this procedure?...How long does it usually take, etc?..

...I am just wondering whether I should just skip it, and have it done

if those nodules get larger via a yearly ultrasound? :) (yeah, I am an

" armchair doc " )

Any suggestions, support or whatever info would so much be

appreciated....

I didn't go for the FNA because one of my nodules has grown over 1 cm and is considered suspicious. Also, my doctor doesn't like that FNA is only about 70 % accurate. I also read this on the web too. So he is afraid that if it comes back negative and is not accurate that I could ignore it and walk around with the cancer. So, in my option I chose to just take that part of my thyroid out. Also, I didn't mention that I have had 3 ultrasounds in the past 2 1/2 years following my nodules. Good luck with whatever you decide. This is just my experience and in no way meant to waiver your decision.

Hi

I'm new to this group (as of today), and was reading through the back

messages, thought I'd reply.

I've had 3 fine needle aspirations in the last few years, and while I

wouldn't

say they were pleasant, they weren't the worst thing in the world

either (I have

Hashimoto's, and one nodule that was suspicious out of four). You

lean back

on the table with your head hanging off a little, then my doctor used

a large

needle to open a hole (I only needed one nodule aspirated) into which

he

stuck 6 smaller needles, one after the other, used to collect cells

for biopsy.

Again, not pleasant, but really more of an odd sensation (the cell

collecting

needle inside your neck is an odd sensation) than a wholeheartedly

painful

one. The whole procedure was less than 15 minutes, not a lot of

blood, and

healed very quickly. I did feel a little woozy afterwards (I think

from my head

hanging), but waited about 15 minutes and I was ok to drive.

Great! Thanks for the welcome!

I was diagnosed about 5 years ago with Hashimoto's, so I'm sure I'm

experiencing a lot of the " ups and downs " that all of you are... it's nice to

have

found a place with other understanding souls!

And, hey, isn't joking necessary when your hair is falling out, your nails are

breaking off, sugar has become it's own food group, and you want to throttle

those closest to you (and then forget why you were so angry)?

I'm looking forward to sharing with you all - thanks again for the warm

welcome...
