Molly California Nicolas, 8 months, tort & plagio, STARband 4/25/06 , 3 , 6.5 -----Original Message-----From: Plagiocephaly [mailto:Plagiocephaly ] On Behalf Of Nikki LoomosSent: 21 June 2006 4:26 PMPlagiocephaly Subject: Silly Questions 1. Chase is a very messy eater (especially when my dh feeds him). He loves to put food on his head. Are the bands easy to wipe off without taking them off (except for the nightly cleaning)? The outside of the band is easy to wipe off while still on baby although you are supposed to clean the band with alcohol so I don't know if you want to be doing that while it is on your child's head. You also don't want to get any food on the foam, some of which will be exposed on the top of the head and the sideburns. It's more difficult to clean and I've heard that it can stain (i.e., if eating carrots, sweet potatoes, anything with a strong colour). The directions that we received from Orthomerica said "the cycle is repeated throughout the day (23 hours on, 1 off), giving slight breaks for hot weather, or messy food that can soil the band". Personally, I would err on the side of caution and take the band off briefly while eating. 2. He's over 20 pounds and wears mostly 12-18 months clothes, so other than sleepers, we have a ton of pullover shirts. Can I take the helmet off for the few seconds of clothes changes each morning? I can't imagine pulling his clothes over the helmet. Yes, you can take the band off to change clothes. If you have neck exercises to perform for the torticollis you will need to remove the band for that so you can try and plan it so you do it all at the same time. My dh is convinced that 22.5 hours is ok, if we miss a few minutes here or there we're ok. I tend to be a stickler, but I can't see me pulling out a stop watch, either. Any ideas or other comments to ease a nervous nelly would be appreciated. Per Orthomerica, "The orthosis must be worn 23 hours a day to constrain undesirable growth and encourage growth in the correct locations". I look at it this way - I've invested a lot of time and money into this band so I'm going to do everything possible to make sure it works and works right. I also want it to work as quickly as possible so I'm not going to take short-cuts here and there with time out of the band. I'd leave it on 24 hours if I could :>) I'm trying to stay positive - we have our stickers ready to go! And thanks to Jen for the great webpage for Luli. I went on (she's adorable) and then created one for Chase. Check it out - no photos yet -- they'll be up tomorrow with his band. I think that's what got me excited about getting the band - thinking of decorating ideas and getting all ready for the decorating :>)
Guest guest
That's ADORABLE!!! I love the football helmet motif! Can't wait to see the pics in his band!!! His Initials Sound out "COOL"!!!!!! I love that! Our orthotist had us work up to the 23 hr/day in the band - Today is the 1st day @ 23hrs. I am personally thinking That I may want to bathe her in the am and the pm - So she will be out of it for about 1.5 hours total. I think that is fine. I find for Luli that she only fusses abut it when I take it off and put it on - so the less I have to do that the better! Jen Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! LULI'S HERE! Guest guest
My son got amazing correction with his first helmet and outgrew it quickly. We took it off for dinners since my husband was the one who did that feeding and was afraid of food getting on the foam. It did not impede his progress at all. You will take it off for a minute here and there several times a day to do skin checks and/or wipe down his head, so taking it off to change his clothes in the morning will be no different. His head will not suddenly grow in the 5 minutes you take off the band. It's a gradual thing which is why they recommend sticking to as close to 23 hours a day as you can. Guest guest
I see you have some great answers, but I wanted to share we don't take my son's band off when he eats and we don't seem to have any problems with him getting food on it. But we were told by the ortho to use Selson Blue to remove stains if there were any, say from food or anything major. Hope that helps. Good luck!
