I just turned 48, which makes me about five years older than you. I don't know if you consider that close to your age or not, but I'm really not much older than you. I had a radical prostatectomy last month (11/17) after jumping through what it sounds like similar hoops that you did. I decided to have the surgery because, while sex is important to me, dead men don't get much tail. (Sorry about that, but it's true.)

In all seriousness, you already understand that what treatment to pursue is a personal decision that you have to make. There are differences between your situation and mine. Your cancer is more advanced than mine was. I'm married with no desire to have more children than the three that my wife and I already have. As I said, there are some differences between us, but there are also similarities. Sex is a big deal. I can identify with that, for sure. No ifs or buts about it. I'm not going to try to persuade or advise you. You've heard it all. It's your choice to make whether to get treatment, and if so what course of treatment to pursue. You owe it to yourself to look into your own heart in the Light provided by your Higher Power and decide what's best for you. In your circumstances, I'm not sure what I'd do. I can only tell you what I did in my circumstances.

One thing that I can think of to offer, if it would be helpful, is, if you would like to e-mail me privately with any questions about the surgery that I had or my recovery since then, I'd be happy to correspond. I'm sure that the other men here, including those who've had radiation and other treatment modalities, would be pleased to do the same. You can also post to the list, of course. Whichever you find more comfortable.

Enjoy what remains of the holiday season and have a great 2007!

Best wishes,

Tom Rue

I was diagnosed feb 06 with A psa of 20.5 I had a biopsy two weeks later that found 11 out of 12 spores cancerous. I have had 6 appointment with doctors....3 urologist's 1 radiation oncologist and a prostate oncologis. I have been told that hormone treatment followed by imrt radiation would be my only choice because the cancer has escaped the capsule. I have been told that there is a very low chance of cure but a little chance is better than none. The radiation oncologist and the uroligist do not agree with each other, the urologist states that I will be impotant for life after hormoes

and radiation and the radiation oncologist says that's not true, now understanding the chance of reaccurance is very high but the side effect will be 100% especially during hormone treatment...Now all the responses I get revolve around sex and how important it is or not. If i was 62 60 59 70 68 I would not feel like it'a a big deal but I am 43 with no children or married living in santa monica california. I have been told so many thing by so many doctors I really don t know who to beleive. The only common theme is that they all say life aint fair ! so for those who think I do not want to go through treatment because I want to have a few years of sex is wrong. I just dont want to throw away any time feeling good for side effects with a little chance of actually getting better. I will diet excersive and hope for the best. I think in terms of being single and no children, my situation is the

same as yours. My diagnosis is " localized " PCa. So initially I opted

for robotic surgery. It seemed to me at the time that this was the

best option. However when I was getting ready for the side effects of

surgery I discovered the Proton Beam Therapy at Loma .

The bottom line is: Side effects are minimal. Which means the 2 fears

I had, Incontinance and impotence, which infortunatly come with the

other therapies, are not an issue with Proton Therapy.

As far as having children, I'm planning to go to a sperm bank before

starting the therapy.

So give it a shut and contact the good people of Loma and find

out what they can do for you. That's another option that is usually

not offered or talked about by the establishment. Some by ignorance

others for economic reasons. But it's there and worth looking into.

Good luck and my best for 2007.

Terry,

Sorry for not answering earlier.

I realize that my last post sounds as if I was pushing Proton Beam

Therapy. It is not my intention. What I was trying to say is Proton

is an option that is worth investigating. Studies show that side

effects arfe less then other mobalities. As far as incontinance and

ED are concerned, my understanding (I stress MY UNDERSTANDING) is

that they are minimal specially compared to RP. I did worry about

long term onset of ED and did ask proton old timers about it. The

answer seems to be that side effects do not increase with time.

I'd love to see the info you have and compare it with the feedback I

have gotten.

Again I am not pushing a specific approach.

Good luck all and happy new year.
