Guest guest
Beau, Just to clarify one point. When you say <snip> Incontinence and impotence, which unfortunately come with the other therapies, are not an issue with Proton Therapy.<snip> you are not correct. Erectile dysfunction appears to affect all the Proton Beam men over a period of time, al least according to one man who contacted the ‘old timers’on Proton Bob. There are also reported cases of incontinence. I believe that both side effects may well be lower than those from neutron or photon beam treatments and I personally think that proton beam at Loma Lind has a lot going for it, but your statement is simply not correct. My diagnosis is " localized " PCa. So initially I opted for robotic surgery. It seemed to me at the time that this was the best option. However when I was getting ready for the side effects of surgery I discovered the Proton Beam Therapy at Loma . The bottom line is: Side effects are minimal. Which means the 2 fears I had, Incontinance and impotence, which infortunatly come with the other therapies, are not an issue with Proton Therapy. As far as having children, I'm planning to go to a sperm bank before starting the therapy. So give it a shut and contact the good people of Loma and find out what they can do for you. That's another option that is usually not offered or talked about by the establishment. Some by ignorance others for economic reasons. But it's there and worth looking into. Good luck and my best for 2007. Beau > > > > Thank you for all the responses but I must say with different > > responses I have read I feel as thought the whole story has not been > > told. Guest guest
Hi Beau, I didn’t think you were ‘pushing’ proton beam – merely expressing your views and understanding, which is fair enough. That’s what most of us do, one way or the other. As I said in my mail, I agree with you regarding the probability that Proton Beam is a superior treatment option. I can’t quote you chapter and verse regarding incontinence and erectile dysfunction – there are a couple of references from my files below. What I was referring to was a man I have been corresponding with him for some months now as he has been undertaking a serious comparison with all treatment options available to him. He told me that after contacting members of Proton Bob with ten years behind them he found that all of them had erectile dysfunction that had developed over the years since treatment. He said they all expressed the view that otherwise they were happy with their original decision and that many of them felt that their loss of erectile function was perhaps due to age as much as anything else. Here are three extracts: <snip> Proton-beam therapy is now approved to treat a variety of cancers, but it has been studied most thoroughly as a treatment for prostate cancer. For example, a recent study of more than 1,200 men with localized prostate cancer found that survival rates for those treated with proton-beam therapy matched or exceeded those of men who had conventional treatment — but the proton-beam patients had lower rates of impotence, incontinence and other adverse side effects. <snip> http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/synthesis/features/in_translation.html <s A recent five-year study of men with early-to-late prostate cancer at LLUMC's Proton Treatment Center tracked nearly 600 men with localized prostate cancer and after five years researchers found that the overall disease-free survival rate was 89 percent with far fewer risks of life-style changes and activity-diminishing side effects commonly associated with x-ray radiation or surgery <snip> . http://www.proton-therapy.org/pr09.htm Table 4 in http://www.oncolink.org/treatment/article.cfm?c=9 & s=70 & id=211 shows an estimated 30% for ED following proton beam treatment and less than 1% for incontinence. I realize that my last post sounds as if I was pushing Proton Beam Therapy. It is not my intention. What I was trying to say is Proton is an option that is worth investigating. Studies show that side effects arfe less then other mobalities. As far as incontinance and ED are concerned, my understanding (I stress MY UNDERSTANDING) is that they are minimal specially compared to RP. I did worry about long term onset of ED and did ask proton old timers about it. The answer seems to be that side effects do not increase with time. I'd love to see the info you have and compare it with the feedback I have gotten. Again I am not pushing a specific approach. Good luck all and happy new year.
