Hello all,

Eventhough I am scheduled for the robotic prostatectomy in January,

I'm still doing research and I found some info about " Proton Radiation

Therapy " and I was wondering if anybody has any info.

I've looked at at the following site:

http://www.protonbob.com/proton-treatment-homepage.asp

and it seems that this treatment is as good as radical prostatectomy

with fewer side effect. It's still early in my research but it sounds

very good.

I'll keep you posted when I know more.

Hi,

I have a chapter in my book about Proton Beam therapy. It was

written by Dr. Carlo Rossi of Loma . I believe that it is

much better than surgery.

I wish you all the bestAubrey Pilgrim, DC (Ret.) I just finished at Loma , 2 weeks ago. I am on

the Bob web site if you want to call.

Your best bet is to call their list of POC's and get a

first hand answer to your questions.

I called over 20 on the list and made sure I got some

who were then at Loma for info. There are 3

doctors there right now. One is a Trama Doctor who

cuts for a living, but went to Loma .

My Gleason was 6, PSA 4.0, so T1C, and Looking at the

10 years study I fall in the %90 cure rate curve.

Thats the same as surgery can give you.

Hi

I was diagnosed with PCa on August 21 (my wedding anniversary - what a present). After resarching options, I decided Proton Therapy was the best choice for me personally. Do not be surprised if some of your doctors try to talk you out of it - as I found out many lump it in with all other external radiation and really do not understand the difference between between photon and proton. I did the same as Dan, talk to men who have undergone each treatment. Listen to the successes, listen to the problems and listen to the failures and make up your own mind. I learned very quickly that I must take charge of my treatment and be happy that no matter what treatment I decide it is the one "I" chose.

I spoke with one Uro that wanted to do surgery. I, at the time was open to the surgery route so the question was robotic that I read was less invasive and had a faster recovery for the patients or non-robotic. I asked the Uro which he recommended. He said he did not do robotic because by the time the equipment is calibrated it takes about 4 hours to complete a robotic and he could could do non-robotic in one and a half to two hours which means he can do four a day rather than two a day. Economically good for him but not exactly the reason I was looking to hear. I spoke to another URO that said proton therapy was a "gimmick" This was the head Uro at a nationally ranked top 10 hospital. I asked him to explain a Bragg Peak to me and he admitted he could not.

I looked at HIFU. It is relatively new and not offered in the US. I than started speaking with men that have undergone several treatments and am convinced Proton Therapy is for me. Then I looked at all of the new Proton Centers opening at the top University hospitals in the country at $150 million a pop. MD , University of Florida, University of Pennsylvania etc. Loma has been doing the tretment for 15 years. I believe that if surgery is the so called "gold" standard Proton therapy is the new "platinum" standard.

Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but I do believe it important the we do take charge of our treatment and if you are still researching you may not be satisfied the you are ready for surgery. I have an appointment with Dr Rossi at LL tomarrow and am scheduled to start treatment December 13. Talk to everyone you can and make sure you are ready for the treatment and side effects.

It goes without saying that we need to investigate every avenue to

help make the " difficult decision " .

The following link provides some more info about PRT.

http://www.regence.com/trgmedpol/medicine/med49.html

As far as I am concerned, I feel more and more comfortable with PRT.

I have few more questions I need to investigate before canceling my

Robotic surgery date.

For those who have already completed their research on PRT, there is a

15 year review by Dr. Slater in the TCRT (Technology in Cancer Reseach

and Treatment) journal : Vol 5, # 2, April 2006.

I was told that it is available in public libraries. But in Los

Angeles they don't have it.

If anybody has read it, can you share it.

Thanks and good luck to all.

Hey ,

Congratulations, one less week to go...

The article I was talking about can be found at the following link:

http://www.tcrt.org/index.cfm?d=3025 & c=4200 & p=13415 & do=detail

One needs to subscribe to have access to the full text.

The lady I talked to at Loma thought that it was available in

public libraries. but no luck.

Information about the study starts on page 7. Within the body of the

article (if you are a technical type) is a reference to the JAMA

publication where the study is published. As you can see, this is

linked from the Loma site.
