Guest guest
Hello Everyone, I hope this post finds you all well. I posted a few weeks back asking if anyone would be willing to complete two questionnaires for me. These questionnaires are aimed at evaluating the quality of life individuals with prostate cancer, with the possibility of obtaining funding to create a quality of life intervention of some sort. I had a good response to my last post, but I still need more in order to hit the 200 mark. If anyone would be kind enough to spare some time, I would really appreciate it. If you are interested, please contact me at: nicnac234@... In the meantime, a huge THANK YOU to all of those who have already completed questionnaires for me; it has been such a help to my endeavours. Best Wishes, Nicola
Guest guest
Thank you to everyone who has contacted me again regarding the questionnaires. I am slowly but surely getting closer to the 200 questionnaires that I need. I couldn't have done it without you! Guest guest
Hi Nicola. The questionnaire was interesting. Keep me on your mailing list in case there's anything else I can do. I don't know if this will interest you or not, but this morning I wrote a blog entry based on thoughts generated by one of the items on your questionnaire. (Actually, it was written as two separate pieces; the first, as a note posted in a newsgroup, and the second shortly after awakening this morning with some rather academic dream content still fresh in my mind.) See http://tomrue.net/?q=gender Hope you don't mind the mention of your project. Let me know if anything is misrepresented. Best wishes, Tom Thank you to everyone who has contacted me again regarding thequestionnaires. I am slowly but surely getting closer to the 200questionnaires that I need. Guest guest
Hi Tom, Thank you for your post and also your email. I will be replying to your email; I have just been flying all over the place trying to get as many questionnaires done before christmas as possible. It is going really well though and it has helped me immensely to have your insight. I especially enjoyed reading your blog and the thought processes created by the questionnaire. It will be interesting to see how that particular question (i.e. I am able to feel like a man) is answered by people. It may be that it is difficult for participants to define what to be a man actually is, as you have discussed in your blog. I am also looking into quality of life in breast cancer, so the same question is offered to women (i.e. I am able to feel like a woman). It will be interesting to see if there are any differences between the groups. For example, is the definition of 'woman' easier to interpret dut to female portrayal in the media, etc. It may even be that the question only has true meaning to those who have lost particular functions that make them feel like a man/woman. This in turn may be influenced by treatment type. Whatever the case may be, I wonder if such a difficulty in question interpretation will affect any of the other questions too? I will most certainly be keeping this in mind when I analyse the results. Thank you for the food for though, Tom. If you have anymore thoughts on this, please do share. In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas! Best Wishes, Nicola > Hi Nicola. > > The questionnaire was interesting. Guest guest
Hi Nicola. I will be very interested in the results of your study. I hope that you will not forget to send me a copy when it's at a stage that you are comfortable doing so. If you would like to send it pre-publication, or pre-submittal, I will keep the copy to myself. In the course of my reading on the subject of gender the other day, I came across the attached article. You may have seen it yourself before in your literature review, but it is definitely the most germane piece that I've seen to the topic of prostate cancer's impact on self-perception of " being a man " . I think that you are onto something when you suggest that there may be variability on the scoring of the " feel like a man " question on your survey based on treatment modality. The attached article gives some interesting perspective to the effects of hormone therapy which I had not considered. If you haven't read this article, I'm sure you will find it very interesting. If you have read it, then just recognize that I am new to cancer issues and did not pay much attention to its psychosocial effects until being diagnosed myself. There is no question that a prostatectomy (or any other tx modality for prostate cancer, I believe) has a devastating impact on sexuality, much as breast cancer does in women. However, gender-image is a something different and, I think, which is only indirectly related to " functions " that you mention ( e.g. penile erection, vaginal lubrication, libido, etc.) and the two are worthy of clear distinction. What I mean is, I think that it's entirely within the realm of possibility for a man or a woman to have totally lost al physical ability for and interest in erotic sexual expression of any kind; and yet his or her identity as and feeling of being a man or a woman remain fully intact. Hormone treatment may have a different result, though even with a man receiving estrogen, for example, there remains some element of acculturation with respect to his IDEAS about taking estrogen and the impact that so-called " female hormones " have on his " manhood " . I place " female hormones " in quotation marks since the fact is that both women and men have a certain level of both " male " and " female " hormones naturally. They are labeled as such more because of their chemical function with respect to human reproduction, rather than (once again) gender identity. Of course I'm over-thinking, I realize. But with another two weeks remaining before I return to work, what else have I to do besides sit at the computer and contemplate my navel (or whatever)? Thanks again for your enjoyable replies. As I said, please keep me in mind for a copy of your study when you're ready to do so. You also have a wonderful Christmas holiday. And thanks so much for your kind thoughts. Sincerely, Tom Hi Tom,Thank you for your post and also your email. Guest guest
Nicola, I had a great Christmas with many of the family visiting. New years will be quiet as I will be studying for my pilot exams in January.Nicola wrote: Hi All, How was everyones Christmas? Does anyone have any plans for the New Year? Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I hope you are all enjoying 2007! I am still working hard on my research in the hope of improving quality of life in individuals with cancer. I am getting much closer to having 200 responses, so if anyone could help me get to that mark, I would really appreciate it. Sorry to be such a pain!
