Guest guest Posted January 1, 2003 Report Share Posted January 1, 2003 HI , Sorry to hear about Kaydee......when I worked at the animal shelter with my Dad we would give the pups and kittens chicken and rice as well.....actually Iams makes a canned food that is formulated for special diets that has chicken and rice base. Guest guest Posted January 2, 2003 Report Share Posted January 2, 2003 Becky, I took KayDee to the vet today. She said it just looked like colitis. She gave her a shot, some pills for diarrhea, and some flagyl just in case. I'm to give her pedialyte today and then try her with small amounts of special food tomorrow. The vet said I could continue with the rice and chicken or give her this special canned food. I just figured the special canned food was simpler. I'm to feed her the special food through the weekend and if she's not completely better by Monday, the vet will do blood work to make sure it's not - guess what? pancreatitis! The vet said KayDee didn't seem to be tender enough for it to be pancreatitis. Boy, don't I know about that. She really hasn't seemed to be in pain, just puny. The vet said she was well hydrated and had no fever. She thinks just giving her tummy complete rest will knock it out in a day or so. As for me, I'm doing okay. It's been a slow recovery from the hernia surgery. I'm really not supposed to lift over 5 lbs but my sick baby weighs 12.9 lbs. My belly was hurting again by the time we got home, but it's better now. I have an appt with my rheumie tomorrow. She's the one I switched to in July, just two weeks before the panc problems returned. She told me she would find it highly unlikely for me to have lupus and acute panc and have the panc problems totally unrelated to lupus. This was when I was doing fine and had not had panc problems for some time. I was doing so well when I saw her that she just scheduled my return visit for six months. However, she said if I had problems to come back sooner. I'd say that being in the hospital 13 times since July, having a chronically low white blood count, hematocrit, hemoglobin, platelet, elevated liver enzymes, you name would constitute having problems. The beginning of August, I begged her office staff to get me in to see her. They told me the soonest appt they had was in December. I told them forget it! She and I are going to have a talk. I was under the impression that once I was an established patient, I would be able to get in to see her when I am sick. If that is not going to be the case, I will go elsewhere. I really, really like this doctor VERY much so I am hoping the problem is simply with her staff. We'll see. Oh, as for the surgery, it was a success as far as the hernia goes. I ended up having a very large incisional hernia and a small inguinal hernia. However, as far as the panc problems go, there were absolutely no adhesions anywhere around the panc or bile duct. So, we really don't know what's causing the acute panc. This past Friday, I had an ERCP to remove the stent that was put in the bile duct back in August and also a liver biopsy. Basically, all my doctors except my GI believe that I have the beginning of chronic panc. I'm still having the blood sugar problems but we're not calling it diabetes at this time. The surgeon said my pancreas has likely sustained enough damage to cause diabetes and the blood sugar problems aren't going to go away. They have become easier to manage by learning how to eat, though. Hope all is well with you and your family.
