Guest guest
Hi all, I haven't posted for a while but just wanted to update on - 3yrs old ASD. I still have some issues and am hoping for some feedback. Sam has been on SCD for almost 3 months. When we first started SCD he really improved for the first 4 weeks and then got sick and regressed. He then staretd improving again. However, he is really stimming alot, I can't seem to get that to stop and he's also toe walking. Progress is slow and I ofcourse, like every other parent on SCD, want to see fast improvements. Its hard to be patient. Currently s diet consists of beef, chicken, pork, fish. These are grilled and I usually marinate with salt, pepper, garlic, lemon and olive oil. Vegetables are fried zucchini. I now give him carrots to eat (peeled) and sometimes peeled cucumbers. He has been able to tolerate these, ie no D for about 4 weeks when I started to give him a clove of garlic in carrot juice. (God bless you Terri for telling me about this- His new Peadiatrician says that he suspects Sam has Candida if he has responded so positively to the garlic) Since this his stools have been formed and plentiful. We started yogurt about 3 weeks ago - we are up to 6 teaspoons (4oz) a day with some honey added. I dilute with water and give it to him in a bottle 2 hours after the carrot juice and garlic. He was really doing well at this stage, new words everyday, happier and even tried to engarge another child in the dr's waiting room. I started the Throps enzymes on 27 December and perceived a mild regression after introducing the enzymes, but all the information on enzymes seems to be that this is expected for 3 weeks after starting the enzymes. He also drinks apple juice and pear juice. I juice myself, boil and strain. For snacks I give him peeled carrots, Sultanas (sometimes), almonds, ripe banana, and recently peeled apple. He sometimes has the almond and honey cookies. One batch lasts about 10-12 days. I make him the nut loaf using almond flour and that will last 7-10 days. He also eats eggs for breakast most mornings, either served with the bread as french toast or poached or I add grated zucchini and nut flour and make as pancakes. He has SCD ketsup. Everything he eats or drinks is made by me from scratch with the exception of course of the ripe banana and apple. As far as raw veggies and apple are concerned, he is really tolerating these well. No problems in fact with food tolerances since the garlic introduction. Prior to that he was having on and off D all the time. His behaviours are improving but I can't really say are sustained. Pre SCD I don't think he understood a lot of what I said to him and he didn't say many words. Since SCD he seems to understand more but not everything, he has some more words but will not repeat a word you ask him to say. He stimms really badly sometimes. I tried cutting back on honey and the juices and bananas but there was no improvement. In fact the stimming and toe walking worsened after being on SCD for 4 weeks. He isn't potty trained but we're still trying. He can't blow kisses. He sometimes runs around in circles. He also sreeches somtimes when things aren't going his way- like a really small child. On the postive side I've seen him pretend play since starting SCD and he is much more affectionate and plays appropriately. He doesn't whine and cry all the time like he used to before SCD. He still doesn't really like to be with other children and won't play with them with the exception of the child in the dr's surgery. His eye contact was non existant before SCD and now its alot better but still limited. So whilst the big picture is that he has improved,I can't help feeling I'm doing something wrong, especially since he stimms more, toe walks and stopped being able to kiss properly after his sickness at 4 weeks post SCD. He seems to have reached a plateau. If anyone has suggestions I'd really appreciate them. Please email me privaely if you like. Guest guest
Hi , Glad to read an update on . The first thing I would try is switching to a different nut flour for your baked goods -- like pecan or hazelnut. You can grind the nuts yourself in a food processor if you can't get the flour. And ARE YOU SURE about the raw fruit and veggies? I gave back raw apples after about 3 months, and later found out they were causing her to grind her teeth. I gave her 1/2 raw apple 2 days in mid-December (on a Tues. and then on a Thurs.) and we had a return of grinding for 5 days! That's just a question, though. If you're sure, then go ahead. Hope you'll get some helpful advice. Sue (From Pickering) > Hi all, > > I haven't posted for a while but just wanted to update on - > 3yrs old ASD. Guest guest
" He also drinks apple juice and pear juice. I juice myself, boil and strain. " , It is really still pretty early to be giving him raw carrots, sultanas, almonds and raw apples. If you are playing " detective " to see if you can get better results than you are currently getting, I would remove these more difficult to digest foods and go back to cooking and peeling his foods. How about some more veggies in his diet as well. Have you tried the sneaky pancakes or sneaky muffins to put veggies in? Veggies are so nutritious. Also on the fruit juice that you are making for him, are you still diluting it? Jody mom to -5.0 and -7.
Guest guest
, Just having an absence of diarrhea may not indicate that he is truly " tolerating " the raw fruits and veggies. If you are seeing negative behaviors increasing, at the same time you are seeing progress in other areas, this would tell me that there is still either some die-off happening....... and/or there is still significant gut healing that needs to happen. If I were you, I would go back to all cooked foods for a few months. Don't just go by whether or not he has diarrhea..... I know that's what the book says, but please remember BTVC was not originally written for the autism community. We need to look at behaviors and other symptoms as indicators, too. My daughter does not have autism, she has a seizure disorder and other brain abnormalities (CP, etc.)...... but after 8 months on SCD, I still don't give her any raw foods (except for the ripe bananas and, VERY rarely, maybe 6 raisins as a special treat). Of course, the fresh raw juices are fine....... but dilute the fruit juice still. Guest guest
I'm a little behind in reading the list...It strikes me that you are going too fast with raw fruits and vegetables and dried fruits. Many of the kids can only tolerate peeled, seeded and cooked fruits and vegetables for much longer than we might think. In my file is a post from the adult SCD list, written by a woman who cured herself of Crohn's, in which she said that she ate only peeled, seeded and cooked fruits and vegetables for the first six months of SCD. I think this is good advice. Message: 4 Date: Mon, 05 Jan 2004 09:40:32 -0000 Subject: 's update - long Hi all, I haven't posted for a while but just wanted to update on - 3yrs old ASD.
