Guest guest
I've been thinking about this for the last week and trying to remember to post it when I sit down at night, but I get caught up on reading and forget each time...now that this is a current topic, it just jogged my (yeast-laden) memory. I've been dealing with chronic candidiasis since I was at least 14 y.o. due to three rounds of antibiotics for strept throat, but didn't know that's what I was dealing with til I happened upon info about yeast and autism 6 years ago in relation to my kids. I've done everything you can imagine to get rid of it as it leads to wicked PMS and soooo many other problems. I'd been off all forms of sugar (fruit, table sugar, etc) for three months when I found out about this diet and really believed that the SCD would be the best way to go for myself and my two girls...and so far it's been great! But I must say that when I ate even a small amount of fruit or honey during the first two weeks, within two hours it was like having pms when it wasn't time for it. Immediate feelings of depression or irritability or just wanting to be alone (the poor hubby). Since I was keeping a food log for each of us, it was easy to see the relationship with food and behavior. I stopped fruit and honey for two weeks, then started making the yogurt during the end of the second week and adding a teaspoon of honey (with fingers tightly crossed that I wouldn't feel like the previous two weeks). I was able to tolerate the small amount of honey, and after a week and a half of the yogurt (about a total of a cup and a half per day for me) I am able to eat fruit without any reaction...for the first time in many years! I'm sold on the diet! My younger daughter seems to be okay with two pears/day and she eats the yogurt (cow's milk--long story) without any reaction after 5 years gf/cf. My older daughter, who has always responded more strongly to antifungals in the past) gets really irritable after fruit or honey, scratches at her crotch within a few hours (lovely visual, right?), and both girls have always picked at the midpoint of their upper lip after a moderate amount of sugar. She hasn't been able to tolerate cow or goat yogurt yet, and I'll be trying again in a couple of months, but plan to start CP acidophilus at bedtime tomorrow. Seems there's a relationship, perhaps, between getting the good bacteria in and being able to tolerate more " sugar " afterwards...at least that seems to be the case for us I suspect. Just thought this might help for those still wondering about fruit or no fruit in the early days. As others have said, you just have to watch your own child to see what's best to do. And journal, journal, journal! Would have loved to have been able to eat fruit and honey right from the get-go as approved in BTVC, but for us it seems getting the probiotics in there for a week or two helped in making that possible. Just my (long-winded) 2 cents. Rose (Mom to - 10 and - 7, both ASD; SCD family 4 weeks; posting from the jug-handle state of NJ)

Guest guest
Rose! Thank you so much for posting your adult perspective about the fruit/honey/yeast connection. It's so good to know " how it works " for one person. And interesting that the tolerances are so different even within your own family!
