Guest guest
Hi Kerry, Wow that was a long letter! I did not want to resend it so I started a " new topic " (not really). Bob had a collapsed lung 2x, each time it was drained and the hole healed. The last time in 2002 it did not. So Dr. Ross decided it needed to be stapled, unfortunately talcum powder had to put in.At that time the diagnosis was emphysema and PF, but Dr. Ross was not sure about the latter. He wanted to put Bob on steroids, negative! We changed doctors and it he is now with Dr. Shukla, also with Greater Newport Physicians. He's been hospitalized several times since and occasionally sees Dr. Ross. The talcum powder contributed to the progress of PF. There is a great support group for COPD, and the gal in charge is Joan Nehs, the group meets 1x a week at Hoag. We did go a few times, but are now unable, due to Bob's dialysis and the deterioration of his lungs. They also have a rehab program which has to have the authorization of the doctor. Bob was scheduled to attend but then he could not muster the 6min. walk. There is also a pulmonary case worker at the hospital, Halpin; she's been a great help! We're over 65 so we have Medicare supplement B and are with Secure Horizons. Let me know how things are working out Gretel
Guest guest
Gretel, Thanks for all the contact info. I am totally confused about the talcum powder though, can you please explain what happened and how. Do you know what caused his lung collapses? Guest guest
Hi Kerry, We don't know what caused the lung collapses; at that time the scarred lungtissue was discovered. When the lung was stapled the surgeon explained that talcum powder was put around the stapling. Our pulmonologist said that the talcum powder eventually spreads in the lungs. We don't understand that very well either. How are things going? Take care Gretel > Hi Kerry, > Wow that was a long letter!
