Guest guest
RAI will not shrink the hot nodule.. RAI will kill part, or all, of the thyroid gland. They are hoping that the nodule will shrink if the thyroid tissue around it is dead. .... although, since I'm not an expert at this.. it's possible that when the thyroid tissue absorbs the radioactive iodine and concentrates it there that the radiation surrounding the nodule will affect it... .... anybody else have any thoughts or knowledge???? Surgery would remove the nodule and the surrounding thyroid tissue, they may even take the entire lobe... leaving the rest of the gland to see if it can kick up production to replace what was lost... You most likely will need thyroid hormone replacement... RAI would kill part, or all, of the gland. May or may not reduce the nodule... could leave you with no gland at all.... and it is radiation that you are exposing yourself to.. I had it done 15 years ago.... so far I'm okay... but.... no on can say what will happen as time goes by... I wasn't given a choice.. whole long story... basically.. RAI or die. Sign this release form or no RAI. RAI is done, but you may still die. Here, take this pill every morning and you'll be good as new. ... I won't comment on the last line.. I'm sure many of you are already thinking what I'm not writing! Topper () On Thu, 06 May 2004 13:07:56 -0000 " jules_4827 " writes: > Hello! I'm sure many of you are already thinking what I'm not writing!<<<< This is what it's all about - isn't it? Quality of life? the doctors are all about the numbers. My doctor told me hypothyroidism was 'preferable' because the medications were [more] benign. How comforting. Except - I get the distinct feeling that there's more he isn't telling me. I am NOT a fan of surgery. this one - in particular - scares em silly. But at least you give your body the chance to heal. RAI makes that impossible. I hate thinking about it because I do noting but spin myself in circles. > RAI will not shrink the hot nodule.. RAI will kill part, or all, of the > thyroid gland.
