Guest guest
, I'm not sure exercising will help your arm. I lose my arms like that if i use them for any length of time. For example, holding the phone to my ear for an extended period or typing on the computer for very long. This is why I needed an electric chair instead of a manual one. (plus it is more fun). I thought this was just normal PLS stuff. If anyone knows anything different, please let us all know. Speaking of fun, you should have seen me flying down the highway yesterday in my wheelchair, 5 miles per hour with tagging along. It was fun, but boy did we get some strange looks. My brother just about died. He can't believe I took it out on the road. It's just a two lane road and if anything comes, I get to the side. There is about 2 feet on each side of the road. Fun, Fun, Fun....you can't imagine the feeling of being free again. Got sunburned too. See ya, Jeanne Ann
Guest guest
I too have weakness in my arms and hands, primarily my left side. My neurologist told me not to do any weight bearing exercises especially lifing dumbells. I believed if I could just keep lifting weights, I could combat the stiffness, and excessive tendon stretch. I suggest doing light stretching exercise to try to relieve over stretched muscles and tendons. The same with legs. Some people seem to gain benefit from doing weight bearing exercises. I don't. Weight bearing exercises exacerbates muscle cramping and spasms...doesn't feel so good for a few days. Just keep stretching and lay off the weights for a while. Guest guest
P.S. From my understanding, over-stretching or using excessive weights lengthen muscles and tendons. This can become a chronic problem that will eventually lead to over lenghthened muscles that are more prone to spasms and cramps...This is what my physcal therapist told me. Warm compresses (hot water bottle, heating pad, or warm bath) helps me...but not too hot. Just warm. Guest guest
i have had a really bad day but to my remarks about the arm. To comment that this is normal PLS stuff is i find condiscending to people who have just joined this site like myself. I can understand people that have been on this site for a number of years getting fed up with the usual PLS symptoms, but to a person who has just recently joined the PLSfriends site. I'm really bladdered with my day, i can't understand that people with such good brains can waste their time arguing the toss or is it arguement, can somebody put the record staight.. To my knowledge nobody should have the same views, it would make life totally boring? ------ Reply to Message ------ To: john.clague@... pls-friendsonelist From: jeanneannneff@... Guest guest
,get some 2lbs,dumbells,do wrist exercises as well as arm.do gradual ex.other wise you will be right back to where you are now, very sore. That should do it for you, unless you have a problem with your arms.I workout with 2and5lb d.b's they help me considerable, also swim 5-6days a week, you might try that also. Good luck,.
Guest guest
Lavon, DITTO! It seems safe to say the everyone has their own exercise regime that works for them. If unsure, one should consult with their doctor. Everyone seems to have their own particular needs and capacity. Thanks too for your " south paw " insight into left-sided weakness. I too am a " south paw " . I thought my left-sided weakness was because I am left-sided dominant...guess not. Must be a brain thing. Guest guest
, Welcome to the world of PLS and the continuing battle to keep strength somewhere, including between our ears. You can try dumbbells. I would suggest starting with 5 pounds or less at first (You can do the conversion to metric, I'm too lazy.) with each arm. Build it up to 2 sets of 10 repetitions each. When that feels too easy, add more weight. Once you reach 10 to 20 pounds, just increase the sets and repetitions for a while. That will help you build the strength and tone the muscle. Going beyond that may be too tiring. However, if you feel like you can do it, go ahead. Just listen to your body. It will tell you what you can and cannot do. Don't push, but be patient. The rewards are there. I have had my legs feel like jelly after riding my stationary recumbent bicycle for more than the time I was used to. But after a few hours, I felt stronger walking. I did find out that too much would cause me to become greatly fatigued. I have fallen asleep on the bike before. My wife just laughs about these things. As long as I'm safe and not going to fall, she leaves me alone. Take care and do your best. It might also help to discuss this with a physical therapist.
