Guest guest
I had my surgery/chemo at age 44 in 1990. My periods stopped after the second chemo and did not return. I did have problems with spotting last yr and they did an unltrasound, endometrial biopsy, D & C and a hysteroscopy. All was well until Sunday when the spotting started again. I have to see the gyn 3/7. It seems to have thrown me into menopause which the Drs. said it might. They say the menopause is likely to be temporary but from the experience of those out there is that true or was yours permanent?

Guest guest
Wow that is deep. I was 28 and am now 29. I already have two children but was really hoping to go for a boy. I pray this is temporary although my Oncologist says it would be best for me to leave my baby making days behind me since my cancer was estrogen positive. I will keep you in my prayers regarding the spotting.--- In breastcancer2 , " moochie " <moochie@i...> wrote: > I had my surgery/chemo at age 44 in 1990. Guest guest
I don't know Jeana. The gyn that did all my other stuff isn't there anymore so this is a new one. I am going to see what he says and then go from there. After seeing him I might contact the onc and see what he suggests. Guest guest
My oncologist said it usually depends on your age. Generally, if you're under 40, your periods have a good chance of coming back. If you're over 40, the chances are that your chemo-induced menopause will remain, and you'll be menopausal for ever after. I'm sure there is a lot of variance between women, though. In general, the earlier your period starts, the later your menopause starts. But of course chemo screws that up. I know of women who have had chemo and then had children, so the menopause doesn't *always* last forever! In my case, I had six months of chemo (same ones you except I don't think I had herceptin). I was forty-six when I started and turned forty-seven in the middle. I had been peri-menopausal already; uneven periods and lighter than usual. So far, my period hasn't come back, and I don't really expect it to. For me, this is actually an advantage, since I am very happy with my one daughter and had too many health problems even before the cancer to consider having another child. So it's one less thing to worry about. And I kind of like having gotten the menopause over with so quickly. Guest guest
I'm so sorry that breast cancer hit you so young. It must be a terrible disappointment to be told not to be able to have any more children. But with an estrogen positive tumor, I'm afraid I agree with your doctor. If your oncologist said it would be best not to get pregnant, there was probably a good reason. I'd at least ask. I have estrogen positive breast cancer, too, and I'll be on an estrogen-blocker, tamoxifen, for five years. I don't know whether or not your doctor thinks you're a good candidate for tamoxifen, but it might affect pregnancy. I can't remember from my own pregnancy whether the body produces more or less estrogen during pregnancy and breast-feeding. You might want to check that out with your doctor or ob-gyn nurse. Best of luck, Jill At 05:58 PM 2/19/2003 +0000, you wrote: >Wow that is deep. I was 28 and am now 29. I already have two >children but was really hoping to go for a boy.
