I spoke with the Phonak rep on Friday at the e Mainstream Conference,

and he did not feel that these are appropriate for a child with a profound

loss. However, you should know that some kids have been successfully fitted

with programmables and digitals that on paper, are out of the fitting

range. It depends on many things.

BTW, the Phonak rep said that the Microlink universal boot will be shipping

within 30-60 days. He also said that they will have a 100% digital high

power BTE aid within a year.

Phonic Ear will be announcing a high power version of their FreeEar BTE FM

system next month, which will ship 30-60 days afterwards. This system will

be suitable for profound losses.

The message below, about SonoForte AudioZoom aids being inappropriate for a

profound loss, concerned me somewhat (in the respect that those are what

were suggested for our son). We are currently in the process of getting new

hearing aids for our son, and these are what the audiologist recommended. He

is currently wearing Pico Fortes. His audiogram starts at 50 db at 250 hz

and goes into a straight downhill slide, down to 110 db at 4000 hz in his

right ear. His left ear is much worse. We were told this is a " severe to

profound " loss. I noticed that a couple of people on the list mentioned that

their children are using these and wondered what kind of losses their

children have and whether they have been effective.

Thanks for any input, .

Thanks for the updates! If you hear more about the Microlink universal boot

as time goes on, please keep us posted.

My son's loss is similar to this: starts at 5 db at 250 hz and drops sharply

to 100 db at 2000 hz in his left ear, and more of a flat severe-profound

loss in his right ear. Our audiologist has had a hard time fitting this

loss, because of his better low frequency hearing in the one ear. We now

have Widex Sensos (the C18s) and he is doing very well with them, but the

audie had to do a lot of tweaking to get the settings just right.
