Guest guest
Jim, Where I work, they put in if you have a 4 yr degree or higher, it's 10% higher starting pay. A 2 yr degree will get you 5%. If you obtain these degrees while working, you get the increase when degree is obtained. For those who do not get a degree, they have a program called " Master Police Officer " which is for X number of hours (I think 200 hours) of external training, going before a review board, and pay reflects the increase. I am not sure on the exact percentage on the Master Police Officer program. The last program was put in about 2 yrs ago, and the chief built the funds in the budget as a position change(such as making a position as Super communicator or whatever name you want to call them). The education degrees had been set in previously on a town wide basis to attempt to get higher educated people for the jobs. The only requirement for being hired is a high school degree, but they were offering incentives for people to get in to government work which tends to pay less than the private sector. I think there is a program that assists with the cost of getting a degree, but am also not sure what that is either. Larew nc911@... Does anyone have experience/advice on how to approach the subject? How to get them to bend the budget to do something like this, etc...? Guest guest
Jim, We are allowed per contract 28 hours of educational time off with pay per year. If the class falls on your regular day on...straight time. If the class falls on your off day..time and a half. Depending on the class..sometimes we get reimbursed tuition. You need the Police Chiefs approval for reimbursement. For the time off...you submit in writing your intentions and it is given to you. Meals and milage are reimbursed also. Hope this helps. It can be financial or > promotional compensation One of our local agencies pays an additional $125 a month for a bachelors degree. When I spoke with them they wondered out loud how they should reimburse a masters. My city will pay something towards tuition -- I think its like $50 per class after you get a B or better. Otherwise, our union hasn't negotiated for anything more for higher education. All we require to get hired is " equivalent to completion of 12th grade " .....which means even if you flunked out or didn't pass 12th grade, as long as you spent 12 years in school you could possibly get hired. Guest guest
My agency has just instituted a tuition reimbursement program for " employment related " courses up to $1000 per year. As it stands now, classes are approved on a case by case basis and must be passed with a " C " or better to be reimbursed. Guest guest
The city I work for will reimburse up to $5000/yr for classes that have a direct relation to any job classification in the city. There is also a training budget for each employee, which I'm not sure what the actual $$ amount it. If your curious, here is a link to our Tuition Reimbursement policy: http://www.tempe.gov/tlc/tuition_reimbursement_policy_revised.htm Potter Tempe Police Department Tempe, AZ
