Guest guest Posted October 8, 1999 Report Share Posted October 8, 1999 First of all, an audiologist needs to come in and check the equipment to make sure it's: 1) Functioning 2) Functioning in conjunction with her hearing aids 3) There's no interference distorting/over-riding the signal If nothing is found to be wrong, then the aud needs to do a hearing assessment with the fm and with the hearing aids alone. No, a real ear measure is not an appropriate measure for an FM. You need to see what a child can hear without the fm and how much improvement there is with one. A real ear is geared more towards what's being presented to the child, not what the child is receiving, processing, and responding to, but if you know what your child is getting in the canal with the aids, then a real ear with the FM would be a logical comparison point. The standard way to set up a hearing aid is to use a small soundproof box with a 2cc coupler, which assumes that the volume of your child's ear canal is 2cc. If the volume of your child's canal is smaller or larger than 2cc, then the settings will not be optimal for your child's loss. The Real Ear removes the guesswork of the ear canal volume by measuring the response from inside the canal. I'm thinking it's perhaps because my daugher has a max conductive loss (with possibly a 15-20 dB sersorineuro loss as well) due to bilateral microtia/atresia. Previously, she had no ear canals. However, last May she had reconstructive where the surgeon created a middle ear space, middle ear bones, created an ear drum and open the external enterance to her ear on the left side. Unfortunately, excessive scar tissue caused the external canal to close about 10 weeks post op. She's currently under-going injections in an attempt to shrink the scar tissue. At 's last autiodgram (just last week) the result was the same as prior to surgery -- with an additional 15dB + loss at 4000 Hz. No longer such a flat loss. The audiologist did test her using what I'm thinking was the " real ear " measure -- but with the canal closed the result was the same as standard air conduction for . was basically " late identified " as she spend her first 2 years 10 months unaided in an orphanage in China. She'll be 4 in December but her hearing age is about 8 months. Any experience with similar conditions? Thanks in advance. Dana rodgers@... It was sooo loud.....all of it......I mean it was sort of distorted sounding.....and " everything " was amplified...and this was on the setting for both the speakers voice and enviromental....the one they primarily use. And the earmolds were button type and VERY thick....I know I have put my daughters current molds in my ear to listen to her aids.....and I could not even get close with these...I bet they are not getting a good fit on her. Also....the volume was set at 5/6 for the right side and 4/5 for the left......her right ear is her better ear.....why would they have that louder???? I tried to turn it down and it would not turn.....she said it was set internally. Sigh. What should I do? Also the teacher said they do not seem durable and that the front switch....the one changing the setting its on (ie. env/speaker etc...) gets bumped a lot....and moves.....she constantly needs to check it. The new system will not utilize her personal hearing aid, but will have an aid that comes with the system. (Did I make myself clear there??) Anyway, I have requested a hearing test with a system that boots into her personal hearing aid vs a hearing test using the new system that has it's own aid. I want to determine if NOT using her personal aid will allow her hearing to be as good as USING her personal aid.
