My daughter, Stacey, age 20, is prelingually profoundly deaf. We followed AV

since she was 18 months old. You can see her or listen to her on our website

I'm interested in the same question -- but wondering if any such kiddos were

identified at or beyond age 3?

Dana,

>but wondering if any such kiddos were identified at or beyond age 3?

is. He is 13. He was diagnosed at 8 m but had absolutely no residual

hearing. Implanted at 3.5. Mainstreamed. Doing well. Uses phone, etc. N22.

In AV therapy after implant (tried before but no response).

,

My daughter did not have an implant until two years ago (when she was 18

years old). I know many prelingually profoundy deaf children who do not have

the CI and did wonderfully in an oral and AV setting. However, there are

different degrees of profound hearing loss and Stacey does have hearing up to

3000 Hz, even though it is mostly at 115 and 120 DB after 2000 Hz.

and 2,000 and 105 for 4,000 and 8,000 then nothing.....is this " good " ? WIth

her Oticon Personics she is testing at 50-55 dBs across all frequencies but

4,000 at 60 dBs.

We are going to try the Widex Sensos.....fingers crossed.

Neither of mine are implanted. One wears linear aids, the other digital.

Implants are always on the table for the future.

You should also try the Phonak Novo Forte E4.

I've mentioned it many times, just not on this list. 84dB of gain. For

severe-profound losses.

Hanni is pre pro. She uses Pico Fortes, she's had the same pair since she

was an infant. Every once in a while one or another of the audiologists (we

deal with 3- the clinical audie we chose, the one from the school, and the

one from the program where she gets extra speech therapy) will recommend

that we get a stronger aid or an aid with more bells and whistles. We have

resisted so far, because we can't turn the aids she's got now more than

halfway up without getting intolerable feedback. What would be the point of

stronger aids? We've tried multiple earmolds with multiple materials and

it's always the same: turn it up past 3 or 3.5 and it's feedback time. Any

suggestions?

We're signing PSE with Hanni. The speech therapist is also using CS with

her for making specific sounds more visible. This year she is not in RSD.

Hanni was in RSD kindergarten last year even though she was technically too

young for it. She would have just done another year of kindergarten if we'd

left her there. Instead, we put her in the kindergarten of Rochester City

School #1. It seemed to us to be a more academically challenging class. #1

School has about 50 HI kids out of a population of 300. There are separate

HI classes but the whole school is wired for FM and there are activities

which involved all the kids together. Hanni's class includes both HI kids

and hearing kids with speech and language problems- it's an experiment they

didn't tell us about last Spring when we arranged the transfer and we are

watching it with some misgiving. We also are nervous because the classes we

visited had a lot more oral communication than we had seen at RSD and Hanni

is not a very sound-aware child. However, Hanni LOVES her new school! So

far so good.

Hi Leon,

My son (age 4-1/2) had Pico Fortes for the first six months after his

diagnosis, before we got Widex Sensos for him. The feedback from the Pico

Fortes was much worse than the Sensos, because the Sensos have some kind of

feedback suppression programmed in. There still is some feedback when he

begins to outgrow his earmolds, but it is not nearly as loud and annoying as

it was with the Pico Fortes. I would assume that other aids with advanced

features may have some feedback control system also, but I can only speak

personally to the Sensos.

Leon - both of my HOH kids wear Pico Fortes, and we never turn them up to #4.

My son's work optimally at setting 3 and my daughter's on setting 2.5. If

we go higher, they complain about them being too loud, not to mention the

fact that they start to feedback.

By the way, I live in Rochester, too. I know someone else on this list was

interested in info on Rochester (Jo, maybe?) I haven't lost your note, just

WAY behind in responding to emails!

Yup that's me. By the way Thank You Leon for letting me know the info. I am

still holding on to it. We are just waiting on news from the major air

carriers there as to openings for my other half.

Have a great day!!!

The Pico Forte's that we have only go up to 4, so if you're getting 3 to

3.5, you're doing well. The gain depends on the internal settings, so how

much amplification she's getting depends on how the audiologist set them

up. I would have the audiologist test the aid in the coupler box, then do a

real ear on your daughter.
