sleep apnea

wake up with dry mouth

not sure why you're awake in the night

fall asleep during the day (anyplace, esp in the car)

wake up with headaches (maybe nightmares)

hard to pay attention to people talking sometimes

brown (not black or purple) around your eyes

drink tons of water, tons, can't get enough

always hot

bed is often all sweaty and looks like 10 people had an orgy in your spot

Any of those fit?

Thanks,

Hello!

I just joined the group and wanted to send in a quick intro. I'm Traci and

am still in the research stage of WLS. I've pretty much decided this is

what I'm going to do - I'm just gather information, educating myself and

then will try to decide which surgery is best for me. My BMI is 36 and I

have hypertension (am on meds) and I believe I have sleep apnea, but haven't

been tested for that or anything. I have a strong family history of

diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and cancer. I'm

also an 'apple' shape, so that can increase my risks even more. I realize I

may be in for a fight in getting my insurance to approve me with a lower BMI

but I intend to try!

I will most likely lurk and pop up and ask questions sometimes. :-)

First, thank you so much for the warm welcomes!!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Almost ALL of those sleep apnea symptoms apply to me!!

WOW!! Okay, so is it usually required to get some special test to prove

sleep apnea? Well, if I do indeed have this, then that would give me the

two co-morbids my insurance requires before approval of a BMI lower than 40.

Okay, I discovered another new revelation yesterday on why I haven't been

able to lose weight on my own. Yesterday, someone sent a link to fitday.com

(not sure if it was this list or another I'm on). It's an awesome site,

and setup much like the Weight Watchers online program I was doing earlier

this year. I have not been trying to lose weight, as I had 'failed' at WW

for a third time and was very discouraged. Normally I only eat when I'm

hungry, stop when I'm full - which is usually 3 meals per day and maybe 1

snack. So last night, I went to fitday.com and entered in what I had eaten

yesterday - guess what?? I only ate 1190 calories yesterday!! This was a

pretty normal day for me - I'm sure there are some days where I might eat as

many as 1500 - but that's really it! I don't overeat or binge on food.

Which is why I'm stumped at my current weight and lack of success at weight

loss. With the WW plan, I was allowed as many as 29 points per day for my

weight. Each point equals approximately 50 calories - so that's 1450

calories a day! HELLO!!! No wonder I don't lose weight on WW!! The two

times in my life where I was a normal weight and maintained it, I only ate

once per day. That's it. It was after I got married (or shortly before)

and I started eating 2-3 meals a day that the weight piled on. So I really

have a screwed up metabolism or something!! I mean I don't eat a lot of

calories. Now granted, the fitday.com did indicate that my fat and carb

intake was high - so maybe that has something to do with it, but still!

We're not mentally ill here (OK, except for a few who shall remain

nameless--you'll note the cuckoo ones). We're not character flawed. We're

people with a very fatal PHYSICAL disorder. IF dieting & exercise woulda

worked, IT WOULDA WORKED. We coulda kept at it, IF IT WAS WORKING.

But it didn't, did it? I lived for 7 yrs on one salad OR steamed broc (nekkid)

per day. At first. When I started gaining, I went to 6 meals per week. Then to 5

meals per week. I drank liquids, of course, but rarely did I put anything in my

mouth other than green things. And then, I started gaining ANYWAY. And even

after this radical starvation, I still weighed 25# more than I do now and I eat

4 small, but normal meals per day. I ONLY avoid milk & sugar.

To me, that is also the proof that our problem is physical. If my bookkeeper

sitting here beside me at 5'9 " , 130# had this surgery, she'd be dead in 6

months. Her metabolism burns like a bonfire. Mine barely gets past the BBQ

igniter stage.

Yes, Traci, you should have a sleep study done to prove that you have sleep

apnea.
