Starting 2003 not so nicely

The following is the public view of a CAD log handled by my Comm Center the

afternoon of 1/1/03. It's a double fatality and <ahem> made me a couple

minutes late for work, as it occurred on the Hwy that I traverse to get to

the Comm Center. (I was due there at 1400 hours.)

I saw the helicopter descending over fields some distance away (before I

got to the crash scene or even saw that there was a crash ahead) and

thought: Hmmmmm, that's not a crop duster....

The vehicle was speeding prior to the crash, attempted to pass another

vehicle, over-corrected and drove (airborn) off an embankment into a

slough, sideways. Hit a train trestle abutment sideways, crumpled up

nearly in half, and slid down into the water under the train trestle

overcrossing. 5 occupants; the driver and right front passenger were

killed. We had to keep Union Pacific from letting trains through until the

abutment was checked for safety.

There's a whole lot of info that was not displayed for the media/public

view... but I'll explain a few codes real quickly:

1039: message delivered

1180: major injuries

1022: cancel

UP: Union Pacific

OES: Office of Emergency Services (CA State)

F & G: Fish & Game

SD: " speed dial " number assignment
