When our son Danny was born, he appeared to us to be completely deaf. He did

not respond to any noises, and he scored zero on an ABR (auditory brain

response) hearing test.

Then one day when he was a few months old, we squeaked a toy, and he responded.

Later ABR tests showed some hearing in one ear. The explanation we got was that

his auditory nerve (8th cranial nerve?) had continued to develop after he was

born. He wears hearing aids now (he is almost 5 years old), enjoys holding

musical toys up to his good ear, and responds to some sounds even without the

aids.
