" When our son Danny was born, he appeared to us to be completely deaf. He did not respond to any noises, and he scored zero on an ABR (auditory brain response) hearing test. Then one day when he was a few months old, we squeaked a toy, and he responded. Later ABR tests showed some hearing in one ear. The explanation we got was that his auditory nerve (8th cranial nerve?) had continued to develop after he was born.
