Normal blood range. Sub acute thyroiditis. Recheck every 4 mos. Iodine deficient. -MS Posted a few days ago I wasn't sure at that time what this lump in my neck was...Well now i am back...Doctor says it's a goiter...why there couldn't be a nicer name??...anyway...he also says that my bloodwork came back in the normal range....now he wants me to go for a ..it's written as a nuclear thyroid scan....what is this??? Geez....most importantly is it going to hurt??? And will i glow??? Guest guest Posted March 10, 2004 Report Share Posted March 10, 2004 Debbie, It's not a bad test... they give you a radioactive iodine tracer.. a light dose. It's sucked up by the thyroid and then they are able to take a scan and see what's up. They can check for hot or cold nodules, abnormal size.. all that fun stuff. When I had mine they were able to determine that the enlarged size of my thyroid was simply that, my gland was double normal size but other than that, perfect. No abnormal growths, no nodules, nothing. They still had to reduce it's out put, though. And since I was in thyroid storm and had been for nearly a year (the first doc that I'd seen, whole long story here, just told me to go home, nothing was wrong with me) They had to do it quickly. They gave me too high a dose and destroyed all of my gland, so I was told. Since then I've learned that it's a fairly common practice to aim at killing the entire gland. I guess it doesn't make a heck of a lot of difference. If they kill all of it or just too much of it, you'll have to take meds anyway... Request a copy of you labs. Showing your levels and the lab's ranges. 'Normal range' doesn't mean a heck of a lot if you feel like crap, its where your numbers actually fall as well as how you feel that counts when treating thyroid disorders. Also, you can have nodules on your thyroid without them manufacturing their own hormones. Beware of the doctor telling you only that your labs are " normal " . Always get a hard copy of your tests to look at for yourself. Then, you can discuss them with your doctor, and what " normal " means to him/her. Guest guest Posted March 10, 2004 Report Share Posted March 10, 2004 My endocronologist told me that he could spend " hours " telling me why the levels/numbers from thyroid blood work are all but meaningless. It's all in how you feel. What's " normal " is a VERY subjective thing. The real use of these blood levels is not so much in the single number, but rather the changes observed over time to establish trends as to whether thyroid hormones are going up or down.
