Hi Topper!

I'm new to this group and have a question -- " What meds and/or

supplements are you taking to help with your hypothyroidism? "

I have been hypo since 1993. The year before I was diagnosed I gained

70 lbs.!

I began seeing a dr. for another problem and she ordered the tests and

put me on synthroid,100 mcg. 2 years ago she put me on levoxyl, now up

to 129 mcg.

I have never felt good, always tired, can sleep 12-14 hours or more per

day.

She tests me about 3 times a year.

Thanks!

Hi Doreen,

Lots of stuff comes into play.... why are you hypo? Disease, surgery?????

Do you have copies of your labs? To give us an idea of where you're at?

For me... I dont' have insurance and money is scarce so after nearly

three years of being on little or no meds (I was getting leftovers from

friends and family) I took the plunge and started treating myself...

I started with slowly raising my dose of thyroid (I have a very sensitive

system) and after about 6 months started adjusting things. I added

Adrenal glandular, DHEA, switched to a better multi-vitamin, added

Selenium in addition to the multi..... Added calcium and iron (timed so

as not to interfere with the thyroid meds). Started doing the glandulars

(thyroid and adrenal) sublingually instead of swallowing. Found that

taking everything in smaller more frequent dosing gave me better results

than just once or twice a day.

In fact, the first time I split my thyroid doses so that I was taking one

dose right as I went to bed and the next as soon as I woke the next

morning... well it was the first night that I'd not had insomnia for

years AND I woke with no pain! That's why I keep saying that it's worth

messing around until you find what your body needs.... For most folks,

taking a dose of thyroid keeps them awake... for me, I drop off to sleep

before my head hits the pillow (and that is awesome when you consider my

sleep pattern had been an hour to an hour and a half to fall asleep and

then waking somewhere between 2 and 3 in the morning and often not being

able to go back to sleep at all....

So... to just make a list of all that I take:

Natural Thyroid (6 doses to total 3 grain)

Adrenal Glandular (5 doses)

Multi-vitamin/mineral caplets (split to give me 8 chips)

iron (1 dose)

calcium (1 dose)

Selenium (3 doses to total 150 mcg)

vitamin C (4 doses to total 500 in addition to the multi)

A vitamin A/D supplement (4 doses)

Omega 3 (1 dose)

CoQ10 (1 dose)

Vitamin E (1 dose)

and Glucosamine/chondroitin if my knees are cranky

I think that is everything.

I eat between 5 and 7 'mini-meals' a day to maintain a calorie range

between 1700 and 2200 per day. I take a vitamin 'chip' every time I eat

something, what ever chips are left over at the end of the day I take an

hour before bedtime with my iron, calcium and other odds and ends that I

want in my system while I sleep)

This 'routine' has taken away my insomnia, taken away my morning waking

pain, allowed me to go into level 4 sleep - and actually dream again!!!!

I no longer have GERD, I can actually eat a mini-meal at bedtime and not

barf in my sleep! (for years I had to eat 4 or 5 hours before I dared to

lay down.. if supper was late, I stayed up.....) I now WANT to exercise

and do it every night. I actually moved a tv into the bedroom so that I

can listen to my shows during my routine, leaving no excuses to skip

because I want to watch tv.... I've created what I call Bedxercises.

Exercises that I can do on the bed so that I don't have to abuse my knees

getting up and down on the floor. It also allows me to do them just

before bed (no laughing here) in the nude, and private. This was a real

help in working with my range of motion issues, not having to deal with

restrictive clothing.... I've actually gotten, I'd guess, about 75% of

the flexibility I had in my 20's.... and I'm 46 now! I've also, finally,

started losing weight! Slowly but surely... and feeling good about it!

I do my routine, it's a two way modified split, every night of the week.

If I have an unusually physical day and feel too tired or sore... I still

go through the motions and do the stretches, but with no resistance

weights. My thought is to teach my body to move and such and not to get

into the 'safe zone' of hibernating when physically stressed.... the

stretches and movement often eases some of the aches from activity... and

it's amazing how neat it is to finish things up and then just roll over

and fall asleep!

It's worth figuring out what your body wants......

shy smile

Topper-

I don't have any lab values to post --I will ask for them when I go for

testing this week. As for my diagnosis, my dr. sent me for a full blood

workup as I had just started coming to her, 1993. At my followup

appointment she just said my thyroid was not putting out enough hormone

and that I would have to take medicine for it everyday for the rest of

my life. She put me on synthroid then, and was on it for 9 years--the

dosage gradually increased over the years after testing. 2 years ago

she changed to levoxyl.

I am 47, very overweight, diabetic with arthritis and very bad knees.

I'm sick of feeling like crap! I have not felt " good " since about

1991--that's the last time I remember having any energy, initiative.

The dr. blames the overwhelming fatigue on my weight.

Topper, where do you purchase your natural thyroid and the adrenal

glandulars you use? Any specific brands, labels? I am not familiar

with these. Currently I take a good quality multivitamin w/iron and

minerals (not w/ my levoxyl), vitamin C, extra B complex, and vitamin E,

3 times a week. I also avoid soy products of any kind.

Thanks for listening,

Doreen

Well, I can get opinionated with this... of course the fatigue is in part because of your weight... but if your thyroid condition were being properly treated your metabolism would work better, you'd have less pain and be more physical and most likely you would not have gained so much weight in the first place...

My meds are purchased in Mexico by a friend who then ships them up to me..... but we've recently had someone that found a place that you can order tabs by the 1,000 and a very good price....

You call them, verify the current availability (right now it's 1 grain) they give you the price and then address, you send them a check and they send the tabs.... The brand that they carry is a Generic Natural thyroid made by Time-Cap Labs in Farmingdale, New York... it's the same brand that I've been using, it has the same formulation as Armour ut with different fillers.

You can get the Time Caps Labs thyroid from Mexico by calling 011 52 This is a Mexican pharmacy that supplies to Mexican clinics.

The adrenal product that I use is a desiccated adrenal glandular (bovine). I get them from a company in the states, Nutri-Meds ( www.nutri-meds.com )
