oh really? :) What is the conference for? We are about 35 mins outside of

Hi - it's a group of folks who have roles like me (I manage social science

computing at Dartmouth College). The university there has a huge collection of

data (doesn't this sound exciting!) that they collect from all over the world -

so if, for instance, you wanted to look at some facet of demographic information

and compare it to something else (say crime statistics), this would let you do

it! Of course I think this is extremely interesting....

Exciting huh - let's not talk about geeks! :>)

But I actually think it will be interesting and am looking forward to it.

Cheers!

Hi - my older son uses Siemans Music hearing aids - I'm not sure if there

are " flavors " of Music hearing aids? And Kirsten's son, who lives downthe road

from me, also uses Siemans digital aids. (Hey Kirsten - KK showed me a picture

of your son - talk about CUTE!) Our kids (yours and mine) have different

hearing loss - my older son has a severe loss (75 db) that's sensorineural.

They have worked well for him - I also like the fact that they have been very

robust....

RE CT Scans: Having a CT scan (Cat scan) is part of the routine medical

work up for a child with a sensorineural hearing loss. They are

specifically looking for problems with the bones of the inner ear (cochlea).

One thing they can see is Mondini's malformation. There are other

conditions in which hearing loss can be progressive, as well as conditions

in which the child can lose more hearing suddenly if he/she is hit in the

head. So the CT scan gives you important information that can be used right

away. Or it can put your mind more at ease if the results are negative.

Other parts of the work up include blood work for Thyroid, autoimmune,

kidney problems, as well as an EKG. These tests are done to rule out

syndromes that can include hearing loss. There are some other things done

that I'm sure I'm forgetting. Rest assured your ENT is doing the

recommended procedure for follow up of a sensori neural hearing loss - and

is not trying to prevent liability. PS - statistically, a tumor causing

hearing impairment in a child is the rarest of the rare, so try not to lose

sleep over that!! in GA (Mom and peds RN)

I guess we'll just agree to disagree on this issue. I would say, however, that

the above tests were certainly not routine with my ped ent, and wonder if they

are routine for all other parents? I felt and still feel very comfortable that

my ped ent would have done any tests that he felt were necessary in my son's

case, but that with thorough questioning and observing of Ezekiel he felt they

weren't necessary due to no symptoms, etc. In any case it's all a matter of

choice how far parents wish to take testing - after all, we could test each and

every child out there for brain tumours, on the off chance that we would catch

one before it got too large. All I'm saying is that it's a very personal

choice and one to make with your eyes wide open.

Petya had the whole work up. I do not know if it is routine for this doctor

or not. But she is adopted and I could answer no questions about family

history. We did find out that she has enlarged vestibules from the scan

which indicates a possible progressive loss. I am glad I know that because

we are preparing for the possibility of total loss.

MY DAUGHTER HAD A CAT SCAN ON MAY 7. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TYPE OF RAYS THE

MACHINE USES? IS IT RADIATION? ANY DRS, NURSES OR TECHS OUT THERE?

I'M DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH REGARDING KARA'S HAIR LOSS AND I'M LOOKING FOR

CONNECTIONS.

THANK YOU
