I'm having a really bad brain day, so not much is making sense to me

today. I have seen several of you talk about " self-medicating " and

adjusting your Armour. Can you get Armour without a prescription? I

take so many other medications, I'm not sure I could actually adjust

the thyroid meds on my own, but I am interested in knowing my options

in case I am unable to convince my doctors to try the Armour or at

least to try adding Cytomel. When I broached the subject, they both

pretty much blew me off and acted like they couldn't believe I would

want to even try the Armour. SIGH.

Any information you can share with me would be much appreciated! I

feel like I am slipping fast back to my worst state where I was not

able to function at all on many days, and only barely able to

function on my best days, and I sure don't want to get all the way

back to that point before I change something!!

Jo, I am self-treating out of necessity, due to no insurance, lack of funds

to go to a couple of doctors 50 miles away, that I think MIGHT be a fit for

me. So, you see, those are my reasons. It's not that I don't want a good

doc, but they are few and far between that know the right protocol for

thyroid disease, and so few understand the extreme value of a T4-T3 natural

substance that has been around for 100 yrs or so. You can see by my posts

today the trouble I've been having making adjustments, but I don't know

whether it would have been any different, as far as thyroid meds, had I been

going to a doctor to adjust these things. I do know that I need a scan,

more than likely, so I'm really not being cavalier about self treating.

Some things require a doctor, let's face it. Now having said that, I do

order my Armour from overseas, having ordered it both from Mexico and

England. An excellent authority on the sbjct has been saying that Armour

seems to be being backordered, due to changes going on at Forest. I have

written them a letter and received a response from an admin sbjct, who is

referring me to the pharmacist specialist there. I haven't rec'v'd a reply

yet. The issue seems to be that there may be some formula changes going on

there, both with Thyrolar and, supposedly, Armour. I voiced my upset about

this, when I made the enquiry, but have not received an answer yet. That

was a few days ago, so I don't know what's going on yet. BTW, it IS legal

to order a personal supply of pharmaceutical prescription drugs from certain

countries, as long as it is a personal supply (not for resale), and is not

any more than a 90-day supply. Narcotics and other Class I, II, and III

drugs are illegal to get, nonprescription, shipped into this country. I've

been ordering my daughter's synthetic T4 med and my Armour from both places

for the last 6 months or so. Would you believe it's been legal since 1988

to do so, but of course, there hasn't been a whole lot of advertising about

it over time.

Thanks so much for the info!! I am going to try again to convince my

docs to do something, but this is nice to know in case. I still

don't have the results of the TSH, T3 and T4 I had drawn last week as

my PCP is in Nicaragua this week, but after reading all I have the

last few days, I'm not holding out as much hope that they will be out

of whack just because I'm feeling so badly. If they come

back " normal, " I am going to ask that he run the Free T3 and Free T4

as has been suggested. I have not had my thyroglobulin and thyroid

peroxidase tests run in almost 3 years, but my rheumatologist had to

send those to a lab in California (I'm in Indiana), so I'm not sure

he will be anxious to run those again. I can always ask, though! My

son has an appointment with the rheumatologist in April, so I am also

going to ask that they run them on him, since he is EXACTLY like me

healthwise (poor thing), and has RA, positive ANA, low C4, etc., and

seems to have autoimmune problems in general like I do.

Thanks again for all the information and support! Although I've been

a little overwhelmed by it all (partly because of my brain fog and

not feeling well), it's SO nice to talk to others who are so

knowledgeable about the subject and UNDERSTAND!!!!

Jo, you can have those two antibodies tests done thru HealthCheck for $60 or

so. You just type in your location, to see where your most local Lab1 place

would be to get your blood draw. You can do it online or call them to order

the testing, pay for it right there, they will send the paperwork, then you

take the papers to wherever you're getting your blood drawn locally, say

" LabOne " , and they will do the draw. Actually, there is a LabOne card

attached to the paper work anyway. HealthCheck has even been on the

national news because of their services. I'm not sure, but I think that

they are on a cash or credit card (or debit card) basis-only, but as cheap

as they are, it's worth it. I haven't had the antibodies done in so many

yrs yet because I've been concentrating on the Free values and costs for

such, but it's time I had it done.

There are a few of us that self-medicate, myself because I don't have

insurance and can't afford to even see a good doc to get a prescription -

forget about going through a dozen to find a good one...

There are several places on the internet to order Armour without a

prescription and one place in the US that offers a non-prescription

strength thyroid glandular.. it's the one that I started on.

The options exist to get your own meds.... and even to order your own

labs....

You'll find links in the links section off the group home page....
