Laverne,

I found the following link to a page which provides some information on what

essential fatty acids are, and why we need them.

http://www.srv.net/~dsserv/toddy1/acids.html

Here is a brief quote from the page, which also lists the benefits of taking

them, as well as conditions that can be helped by supplementation with EFAs.

" Essential fatty acids are sources of Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids

(technically categorized as polyunsaturated fatty acids). The body must have

these essential fatty acids, yet cannot synthesize them itself. One of the

main functions of essential fatty acids is the production of prostaglandins

which are hormone-like substances that regulate many body functions. They

basically control every cell of the body on a second-by-second basis. They

are required for energy production. They increase oxidation and metabolic

rate. Energy levels go up with high stamina and decreased recovery time from

fatigue.

The brain does not function without essential fatty acids. "

I know that Dr. Atkins really strongly recommends EFA supplementation, and

he discusses it in every book he's written (at least the ones I've read).

They are thoroughly discussed in his book, Dr. Atkins' Vita Nutrient

Solution, as well as in his new book called Dr. Atkins' Age Defying Diet

Revolution.

In a nutshell, it's very important to get the good oils into our diet. Oils

like olive oil, and supplements that provide Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty

acids.

I take black current oil & flax oil. I just can't picture me taking

fish oils, that sounds so nasty.

I wouldn't know an essential oil if I tripped over it Laverne. My

philosophy is to eat a varied diet with lots of veggies and few additives,

take a daily multi-vitamin, and drink my water. I'm not into taking a bunch

of pills, herbal or otherwise :)

Laverne,

In additional us using only olive oil or butter as my cooking lubricants of

choice, I also take flax seed oil and borage oil. I have taken fish oil

caps in the past, but didn't like the fishy-ness I got from them. I also

take Vitamin E capsules, just for good measure.

I also eat macadamias, pistachios, a few peanuts, almonds, pecans and

walnuts, which are also good sources of EFAs.

Let me try that again!

I said . . . " Laverne,

In additional us using only olive oil "

What I meant was " In addition to using only olive oil "

Brain fart.

Thanks Terry for all the info. I checked out the e-mail you gave me and

they had a toll free # so I called it and talked to someone there about

the EFA's . He said we should take equal amounts of flaxseed oil, borage

oil and evening primrose. He is also sending out some info to me. Thanks

again Terry.

Laverne,

I do take fish oil (EPA), and I do think it helps with continuing weight loss. If you do, be sure to get "cholesterol free" EPA, so you know it's also free of pollutants. In Protein Power, they explain the same process gets rid of both cholesterol and pollutants. The next time I'm out of town, I plan to find some gorage oil and flaxseed oil and check prices. Although taking them separately is a tiny bit more bother, I still suspect it will save $ compared to Atkins brand, which I did take when I first started.

On page 274 of DANDR, Dr. Atkins suggests:

"2 capsules of gorage oil, 2 of fish oil, and 2 of flaxseed oil. Convenience lovers may opt for six of the Essential Oils Formula, which contains all of the above and which I prescribe to my patients."

Can anyone tell me if they take CoQ10, and if they can tell a difference? Supposedly in one study, 50% of the participants lost over twice as much weight on the same diet. It's also used to boost the immune system. It's tempting, but I want to know if there are any side effects! I try to be wary! Any comments?

I'll have to let you know late next month if the CoQ10 does anything useful.

I just started it today. We'll see!

Beth trust me you would not think them nasty if the alternative was pain!

Laverne I have taken assorted oils for several years and am convinced that

they do help in many ways. My primary problem is pain from various injuries

and arthritis. I take them because they are anti-inflammatory.

Borage oil has the same EFA as evening primrose oil, but at twice the

concentration. You don't need both, and I would go with the borage oil.

The one you are missing is fish oil.

Hi Trudee,

Thanks for the info. I take Coq10 for the heart protection of it and it

is also very good for protecting your teeth and gums. I have been taking

it for over a year and I have no side effects. As far as weight loss I

dont think it helps much. How do I no if I'm buying no cholesterol fish

oil ? Will it say on the bottle?

Trader Joe EFA combination, Flax, Borage, and a EPA concentrate from fish by

Jarrow I think. Also flax by the tablespoon when I remember. Usually with

cottage cheese chaser. According to rumor they are synergystic.

Synergistic means that when you have two things that are effective on their

own, when they are used together, their effectiveness is enhanced even more

by each other.

Does that help at all?

Laverne, I take the Atkins brand as there is not enough free time

in my life to research the subject. I can't really say whether I can

tell any difference with our without them - I'm just going with them

cuz Doc A says to.
