Guest guest
Well, good for them! I say make these alarm companies hire their own security to go check on them! Especially the many alarm companies that cant even get a rep to show up more than 99.9% of the time! These of course are my personal views and not those of my department ... we have 15 min to dispatch alarm calls. Lets put it in all the papers, news programs, etc that pd is no longer responding to alarms. Why dont we just take out an add and address it " Attention: all potential criminals! We dont care! Guest guest
This is NOT a new subject...it's been bantered around for at least the last 8 years....in 1994, there was a False Alarm Task Force organized to look at this idea.....nothing has changed in that time.....alarms are still being handled....however, the dispatch weight has changed from 15 minutes to 60 minutes (in hopes of private response companies calling back to say that PD is no longer needed, so their clients are not charged by the LAPD). It's up to the responding officers to leave a Form 2.90 (notice of an alarm response) and to the LA Police Commission to ensure they collect the fees for the false alarms (provided the first assigned officers (primary unit)) PROPERLY USE THEIR MDT to dispo the call as FFAL, and for the IT crew to understandably organize the info. Why are people in other parts of the country (in this newsgroup) getting SO upset?

Doesn't really matter that the response is stopped, it's the advertising of same that bothers me. Bob

Because some of us grew up or lived in what used to be a great city. Because it is painful to watch such a city, theoretically still in the US, slide into the abyss of the dump that it is becoming. This is just one more step in the transition. On a personal note, I recall laughing at TV shows, where the New York apartment dwellers, turned 5 deadbolts before opening their doors. Now foresee that same paranoia coming to my beloved California. To continue; because many of us are still under the illusion that crime does not pay and that there is an attempt at justice for victims, regardless of where in the US that activity occurs. I know, it's naive, but it is still a goal I would like to see striven for; and when we abandon those goals, it is the same as giving up. Because I would like to remain under the illusion, that cops are responding to criminals, not two dipshits, who where too stupid to get married and have children in the first place, who are now fighting for the umpteenth time, or to some other politically correct or social ill, that society has pushed upon the PD. It is not just LA, but whole sections of the country with the same problems, and there are areas with as much crime per square mile, but it just assigns LA the position of leader of the pack. As a rookie cop I spent a week at the riots in South Central and 30 years later as I retired, I watched the riots not far from the same locations. There are many who pass through LA on the freeways, afraid to get off on an offramp they are unfamiliar with. I used to drive a solo patrol unit into what was then refereed to as the projects, take reports, talk to people, arrest people. Now some of those areas are not entered without several multi-officer units. As a person who has written both police and fire department budgets, I am fully aware of the cost of protection. But the system is getting out of whack and this is just another symptom. We don't respond to 500 juvenile shoplifters, some, who could possibly be swayed, but we spend a million on prosecuting an actress, who gets probation. Sorry, I am rambling before I've had any coffee, and I guess I should do some work, but you set me off, with your zealous proprietorship of LA and it's policies, which through the magic of tv, eventually become the norm. I could write on the social ills for hours and my priorities for police and fire service, but it would just bore you, so I shall continue to pursue my coffee. Guest guest
>Burglar alarms serve no other purpose than to waste taxpayer dollars and >create revenue for the alarm company...period.< I didn't see my first response, so I'll answer again... I pretty well agree with the above. I understand the concern on " advertising " that they are going to quit responding to alarms. However, the response time to alarms in most large cities is so long now, it's a waste to go... The " advertising " might cause a youngster to try a burglary, but unless he/she's leaning that way already, I doubt it. Burglar alarms are of the least concern to true burglars.. They already know the priority and response times. If over 90% (and I'd guess 99.9) are false, and they are using up to, or over, 15% of their patrol time going to these false alarms, it seems a pretty good decision to drop them... Guest guest
Speaking of alarms, during the nasty storm we had over the Weekend we were getting at least2-3 audible alarms every hour -- combination of wind and rain were setting them off like crazy.
