Guest guest
I am a newbie to this diet also and would like to say that I have enjoyed all the posts so far! I've only been a member of this list for a few days and already have a lot of info! However, I would like to add that I also dehydrated myself. I drank liquids, but was on no carbs and after suffering from MAJOR sugar and caffeine withdrawal for 2 days, felt great until I cheated about 2 1/2 weeks later. I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks, and continued to lose even when I was cheating. I started induction again yesterday and today was so sick I could hardly stand up. Went to the doctor, who said I was dehydrated. I've been drinking so much liquid that I go to the bathroom at least once an hour, so now I'm stumped! I've even started eating more carbs but my system is still messed up! I am severely addicted to sugar, I think! Any advice from you Atkins "pros" out there would be much appreciated! I don't want to stop, I just want to feel better!

Guest guest
I am sorry to hear about your mother and her friend, but here is the story on glucose: 58% of all protein is convertible to glucose and 10% of all fat is convertible to glucose. This means, if you absolutely NEVER eat another thing that contains sugar, your body can manufacture all the glucose you need from protein and fat! Your body also has a natural defense against ketoacidosis...it releases insulin to restore blood pH, not break out in hives. Both low blood sugar and hives could be food allergies. Not sure what happened in your Mom's case, but dehydration is definitely an issue, due to natural diuretic effect of LC. Also, in the case of low blood sugar, this could be result of not eating enough (at all) or going a long time since eating or vitamin/mineral deficiency (not taking supplements) http://www.mothernature.com/ency/Concern/Hypoglycemia.asp It also sounds like doc may be connecting unrelated issues by blaming all this on LC, but it should definitely be resolved to the root cause, so it doesn't happen again. Guest guest
I am not flaming you either But if they had been drinking the reccommended water (64 ounces PLUS eight ounces for every 25 pound they are over weight) I would venture to say that they would not have a dehydration problem. As for the glucose.... a lot of the protein is digested as that. What were they eating? Were they having their 20 carbs a day in veggies, or were they using some of that on snacks? Were they actually on induction, and following the plan? If they were following the plan as it is supposed to be, low blood sugar is not likely. Many people say that they are "on Atkins" when in reality, what they are doing is *not* the plan as Dr. Atkins outlines it. If the plan is followed as it is written, fruit is not needed. Again, I mean no disrespect. Carla Mancil wrote: Hi everyone. I need to share this with everyone ESPECIALLY those new to this diet. My mother went on the diet with me about 3 weeks ago. She easily got into ketosis and lost 5 pounds her first few days. Then she got poison oak (while in ketosis). The doctor gave her cortisone shots AND steriods AND bendadryl to take for this. Now, knowing that the liver is needed to metabolize fat and produce ketones, doesn't it seem to reason that the introduction of steroids during this time would cause negative effects? The very next day after she started taking the medications, her ketone level was negative. She was still eating the same foods. She took the entire prescription of the medication but began having a different problem. Her legs were breaking out in hives terribly. Well, she went back to the good ole doc who gave her another round of steroids and cortisone. Well, guess what? It wasn't poison oak at all. Here body had become too acidic because of the combination of ketone bodies and steroids, plus she was seriously dehydrated. Her friend, who under my advice, or should I say (recommendation) also went on Atkins and was hospitalized because of LOW blood sugar and dehydration. Ok, here I am, my mom is very sick and so is her friend. I am getting nervous about this diet. I love my mom very much and I am worried about her well being. Don't our bodies NEED some glucose for day to day functions? Here is my advice for newbies! There is a TOO low point as far as carbs are concerned! Please eat your veggies and lots of them to keep you blood sugar elevated enough to keep your brain going good! DRINK Tons of water. Go above the requirements of (8) 8 ounce glasses by at least 64 more ounces. Every muscle in your body can dehydrate including your brain and heart! If you are feeling very ill and in heavy ketosis, have a medium carb snack such as 1/2 of an apple or a very small cup of milk. Finally--This is an incredible diet. Once you have switched your brain from fat storage to fat burning, you have ignited a fire that will burn for you for a long time. But there are steps you must maintain along the way. Please don't think this is a flame session for Atkins because I LOVE IT. Down 22 pounds and have never felt better, but I have the advantage of Internet friends and knowledge. My mom has a PC but poor girl just can't figure out how to do anything but play pac-man LOL (just kidding). Take care everyone and remember this is a LOW-CARB not NO-CARB way of life. Your body and brain cannot live off of Ketones alone, you must have at least a minimal amount of glucose. If your body does not synthesize protien effectively enough to produce glucose, you may have to add a small amount of carbs such as lite bread to your diet. Guest guest
How much do you weigh? How much WATER are you drinking? How much other stuff are you drinking, and what is it? (in ounces) I mean 3 6 ounce cups of regular coffee, 1 12 ounce can of diet coke...etc. If you can tell me this, maybe I can help you. Guest guest
Thanks, I don't know if it is so much her doctor but the people around her as well as her own mind. I have just been trying to study up on functions of the liver and diabetes to see if one of these may pertain to her. I knew that fat and protien both could be converted to glucose "unless" there were some type of liver imbalance or problem that slowed or prevented fat metabolism altogether, or protien synthesise for that matter. There is definately something wrong and I don't think it's from the Atkins WOE, I think it is from the introduction of potent steroids at the same time she was in ketosis. I am slowly putting the pieces together but am still rather concerned. There is definately a "not-so-smart" Doc involved here. She has since went to an allergist who gave her levaquil for a sinus infection and Allegra for seasonal allergies. Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate all of you so much. Guest guest
With my mothers friend, I think what she did was cut way down on all carbs, but I just found out last night that she wasn't actually still on Atkins when this happened. She had decided not to do it anylonger about 3 days prior. I thought that was interesting in that she probably had the same ole insulin problem creep back up with high/low bouts of blood sugar. I seriously doubt they were drinking all of the needed water either. After a good dose of pure glucose, my moms friend was back home the same day. As far as my mother, she is now off of Atkins and back to feeling like crap. I really think that where mom is concerned it was the steroids and cortisone in combination with ketosis, plus she takes premarin.
