Guest guest
Dear LIstserv Members- I am looking for information about places to get good educational evaluations for HOH children. My daughter is in 3rd grade in a public school where she is the only HOH child (she is also delayed in academics/speech/language and needs a modified curriculum and support) and we are realizing that we need to make a change. We are considering moving to a town that has a school that would be more supportive of her needs or homeschooling. Before making this decision, I would like to have her evaulated by a person or school that knows a lot about HOH kids, especially about HOH kids who might have under/overlying learning problems, ADHD etc. I am looking into taking her for an evaluation at The e School in St. Louis, The Sunshine School in San An, or Dr. Isquith who is in land (or somewhere East). If any of you have experience with one of these (or any other) in terms of educational evaluations, I would greatly appreciate you sharing your opinions! Thank you in advance, Sally Fogarty

Guest guest
Kay- Thank you for your response. If you don't mind asking Monday, I'd appreciate it. If you recall, I began investigating Sunshine in June--then my husband had an accident and all that stopped. Well, he's recovered enough for me to start my process again. I have contacted the school director (back in June) but did not get to discuss the evaluation process. Thanks so much, Sally
Guest guest
I have been recommending Dr. Donna Morere who did 's eval. She subsequently has done evals for other children I've advocated for. She is a strong advocate for your child, not just an accessor. What's even better is that she understands and uses all modalities of communication. She teaches psychology at Gallaudet. Her son is deaf with a cochlear implant and he signs and cues. She lives with deafness both at home and at work. She has significant experience in assessing kids who have hearing loss and other compounding learning disabilities. She was there when it counted for and as a result of her advocacy, he's finally getting most of the support he has needed for years! Her biggest problem is her busy schedule. She is now running a remediation program (a part of which is administering the Fast Forword Program) after school is out for children with hearing loss and CAPD to help them achieve literacy and overcome their learning disabilities. Her email address is damorere@.... I have not had an educational evaluation at any of these schools, nor has my son ;-) , but my son is in the mainstream program of the Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children. I don't know much about their educational evaluation program (or if they have one), but if you would like, I'll be more than happy to ask about it on Monday. If you do end up coming down here for an evaluation, please be sure to let me know. Hugs, Kay
Guest guest
Sally, Since you mentioned St. Louis, I'm thinking you may have been referring to St. ph's Institute for the Deaf. My daughter attended the pre-school there and after we left, we continued to receive quarterly newletters. According to the newsletters, some time ago they started a new program for children experiencing language problems. The school is oral and the extra program was focused on those oral children who did not seem to be making language progress. There was a focus on increasing certain visual input to increase comprehension and learning. If you are considering St. Louis, it might be a good idea to contact them and ask specifically about this program. Perhaps they utilize specialized testing when there are potential language problems.
