Being Developed as Alternative to Plastic Wrap</A> -

Researchers from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) have developed

edible vegetable and fruit based films that may reduce the need for plastic

packaging. Lab studies have shown that the new wraps work as well as

synthetic wraps for preventing oxygen from reaching the wrapped food, which

causes degradation and food spoilage. However, although these may one day be

a great new alternative to plastic, I would not advise eating the wrapping.
