Guest guest
De, I am new here but can relate to how you feel, I started at 272 lbs on aug 1st am at 260 now, but initially, I had dropped 5 lbs, nice and simple, then omg was so upset had gained, 6 back? How is that possible i thought, i was eating perfectly, no cheats, and walking daily, and drinking my water, well, guess this is very normal, to gain at first not loose, your not gaining weight, you are gaining water or muscle, and most likely muscle surprisingly very quickly in the beginning, " Muscle weighs more then Fat " so measure yourself all over omg thats much better way of telling, I lost 2 inches, in 2 weeks. So dont get discouraged, I know it goes off snail snot drippingly slow, lol but it will go, my aunt, was 250lbs in January at 55 yrs old, and she has lost 100lbs, in 8months, on LA Weight Loss program, I cant do that its too expensive for me but works for her. But heck if she can, they I can and you can too!!! Smiles, dont give up keep going and do drink your water. best wishes fondly laura > >Reply-To: weightlossbuddies2 >To: weightlossbuddies2 >Subject: Hello & Help! >Date: Mon, 19 Aug 2002 19:50:16 -0000 > >Hi, just got started on this group and am hopeing this is my answer. >A little background for you... Guest guest
De, weigh youself AND take your measurments! If you are building lean muscle you will shrink but might not lose the pounds too fast. Lean muscle is denser than fat, so you will be smaller but not necessarily weigh less. Just keep it up! also you may have cut too many calories. Talk to Ang and get your BMR and don't go below that amount of calories. Does it sound like > I am whining? GOOD. I am begging here, ANY ADVICE PLEASE!! > De First, do get a check up and ask your doctor to check your metabolism just in case. Other posters may be able to suggests specific tests. Next, since you have been watching your weight, have you been keeping a food log? I recommend that for the next week, measure and record EVERYTHING you eat. (You don't need to record pure water-- but it's ok if you do. Do record all other drinks.) For now, don't use measurements like " handful " or " helping " . Be very specific: cups, ounces etc. Carry a measuring cup with you or use a scale. (There are some cheap food scales available at Wallmart. Buy one that measures less than a pound.) If the food is certain brand, record that. If the food has a nutrition label, record this nutrition info from the label: suggested serving size, calories, fat, protein and carbohydrate. To help yourself, make a tally sheet with columns for the important information. (Food, brand, nutrition information.) This is very important: record EVERYTHING. If you eat 1 chocolate kiss, record it RIGHT AWAY. The reason you need to measure: My sister considers 1/8 slice of pie a " helping " . My brother-in-law considers 1/3 a slice of pie a " helping " . So, you need to be specific. I'd advise you to take the weights off your ankles. Knees aren't designed to carry heavy loads. Anyway, if you are heavy, the weights are not significant compared to carrying your own weight when you are at the office. (If you want weights when walking get a weighted vest or use wrist weights.) After keeping your food log, you can publish it and we can estimate your calories and help you find ways to redesign your diet. Guest guest
> I have went from 122 to 245 and > believe it or not, I DID NOT NOTICE!! ..........LOL. Oh I believe it --- I was really angry with my husband for " not telling me I was fat " - which he thought was rediculus. But I didn't know! I saw myslef in a window refletion and it freaked me out! I was so upset I went back to my car, drove home, and stayed there. I was so emmbarissed...as if I woke up one day with an extra 100 pounds. >I cut out almost all fatty foods, I bought a treadmill > that I have walked to the moon and back on, I run around the office > with weights on my ankles, I have drank so much water there is never > going to be a chance of dehydration for me and yet.... You are building muscle and loosing fat (start taking monthly measurements of your tummy, hips and thighs to find out - you could be getting heaveir but loosing inches). Or number 2, you could be gaining weight because your not eating enough calories. Do a search on BMR (NOT bmi, BMR). Do a day or two of counting your calories and fat grams and then I'll run some numbers for you and we'll see what's going on here. I may have some ideas but first lets get a look at what's going on :-) Ang
Guest guest
I just want to correct this statement for the sake of fact... " Muscle weighs more then Fat " Muscle does NOT weigh more than fat... a pound of muscle is the same weight as a pound of fat! the difference is that a pound of muscle is DENSER than a pound of fat, so it looks much smaller! Also, lean muscle needs more fuel to run on than fat, so the more lean muscle you have the higher your metabolic rate. That's why skinny people can eat so much and not gain weight. Guest guest
Hi, Welcome to the group. Maybe you should try measuring yourself instead of using the scale so much. You don't want to be discouraged after working out so much. You may have put on some muscle too. I know some weeks I think I do so well and then the stupid box tells me I'm up 3 pounds. I decided to keep on making changes in my eating habits and exercise daily and not worry about the numbers. I'm losing inches so I know I'm losing weight. I don't have to see the numbers everyday to prove it. Good luck on your new plan. Keep us updated on your successes!!!....Ramona > Hi, just got started on this group and am hopeing this is my answer. > A little background for you... I am a 27 year old female, 5'9. Guest guest
Just thought I would mention about the scales. I baught one at walmart the other day for less then 4 dollars. I use to use measuring cups for my healthy choice ice cream and today I used my new scale. Come to find thet I was eating tow servings instead of one. I was packing the ice cream in and a little over the measuring cup. When you weigh it you can't add a little extra with out seeing in front of your face just how much you added! That might be part of the reason I go through spells where I don't loose for a long time. Get a scale I wish I would have years ago I mean come on only 4 dollars what was I thinking when I grabed a chunk of cheese and didn't weigh it. I just figured oh thats about 3pts when It probably was more like 6 or 7. Oh I have been doing the weight watcher diet I do everything in pts. The other reason it's good to measure food quantities is this: Some overweight people really DO have a low metabolis due to some physical problems. If you've honestly been measuring your food, and tabulate all your food you'll KNOW if you are eating a little and not gaining weight. If you are really eating very little but gaining weight, then you can probably motivate yourself to be more aggressive about getting your doctor to test for hypo-thyroid problems. There are a bunch of tests for hypo-thyroid. One is a reflex test. If you suspect hypo-thyroid, ask your doctor to do a reflex test. I can look up a reference for you, and tell you the name. It can be done in a few minutes. Since this takes very little time, even an impatient doctor should be willing to do it. You can go to the library and check out some information on hypothyroidism. But first, record your food! There is no point in demanding a battery of painful blood tests if your thyroid is ok and your just eating too much! Lucia -- lucia@... Guest guest
Hi Michel, I had the very same thing you had after I got a food scale! I've started to log what I eat and calculate calories and fat grams since about a week now, and I'm finally starting to lose again. Hurray!
